HI, I'm looking for advice from you more experienced players. I'd like to optimize my defensive strategies, so that I don't waste resources and end up with an overblown defense, but at the same time not be so weak that just about anyone would want to attack me. Any tips for creating a balanced defence strategy/advancement would be great!

There are defense-related FAQs out there, you should check them out first before you ask for help directly. But here's some basic advice anyway, and this is something a lot of new players fail to realize: You shouldn't stockpile your resources! Don't be afraid to spend them on defensive measures, because a potential will not only hesitate when faced with a strong defense, he will also hesitate when faced with a less-then-profitable opportunity. So spend what you've got, don't hoard it.

Most people have a defense ratio.
Example:
-Mine-
1000RL:1000LL:250HL:250IC:60GC:30PC
Works, I've been attacked once by a player ranked 26. But no one else... EVER!

I wouldnt suggest defence, and if its ACS... pfff then u wont defend trust me...
Just pimp your fleet.

i think defence is realy a bad strategy. You could just make your fleet stronger and that way you can develop faster, including with defence if you realy want it. I, personally dont build a single RL in my planet

Yep, try to get a moon at one of your planets so you can send your fleets to it so they can;t track it. Best strategy!
