PROSSER, Washington (AP) -- Secret Service agents questioned a high school student about anti-war drawings he did for an art class, one of which depicted President Bush's head on a stick.
Another pencil-and-ink drawing portrayed Bush as a devil launching a missile, with a caption reading "End the war -- on terrorism."
The 15-year-old boy's art teacher at Prosser High School turned the drawings over to school administrators, who notified police, who called the Secret Service.
"We involve the police anytime we have a concern," Prosser Superintendent Ray Tolcacher told the Tri-City Herald newspaper.
Secret Service agents interviewed the boy last Friday. The student, who was not arrested, has not been identified.
The school district disciplined him, but district officials refused to say what the punishment was. Tolcacher said the boy was not suspended.
The artwork was apparently part of an assignment to keep a notebook of drawings, according to Kevin Cravens, a friend of the boy's family.
The drawing that drew the most notice showed a man in what appeared to be Middle Eastern-style clothing, holding a rifle. He was also holding a stick with an oversize head of the president on it.
The student said the head was enlarged because it was intended to be an effigy, Cravens said. The caption called for an end to the war in Iraq.
A message left by The Associated Press with an after-hours duty officer with the Secret Service in Washington, D.C., was not immediately returned on Monday.
"If this 15-year-old kid in Prosser is perceived as a threat to the president, then we are living in '1984'," Cravens said.
Tolcacher insisted it was not a freedom of speech issue, but a concern over the depiction of violence.
"From what I saw, [school officials] were right to be concerned," Prosser Police Chief Win Taylor said.

Blame the teacher who turned the drawings over to authorities and the retarded ideals of a poor excuse for a school system rather than the ones who responded to the call.

That's a bit of an over-reaction. He probably thought it was cool to make a violent drawing. He's 15, for Christ's sake!

I was going to point this out but Cel got here first.
All of you realize it's actually against the law to talk about harming the president right?
It's the Secret Service's job to investigate that sort of thing. When a police chief calls them and turns pictures like that over to them, they're obligated to at least question the kid, even if they know it's just some idiot kid thinking he's making an intelligent statement.
And be sure to read the article. Someone called them...it's not as if they were monitoring him with video cameras. Some of you are willing to see a conspiracy in everything.

It is against the law to talk about it?
Or it is against the law to conspire against him or plot to kill him?
Big difference.

I'm pretty sure the law is talk about it. It's one of those few laws where there is absolutely no gray area. Just to give you an idea of how seriously those agencies take that sort of thing...

The teacher should have turned it over to his parents to beat his ass, and thats as far as this ever should have gotten.
Thanks to the way schools work now , teachers won't assume any responsibility and will contact the police before contact parents even over stupid mistakes that CHILDREN make. You know why? Because of all this empowerment b******t that has skewed the reality of life, a 15 year old kid is not (despite what some think) very capable of understanding degrees of right and wrong without some parental direction, thats why children are not adults until they are 18 (which is probably too low but has seemed to work out pretty well).

Lest we forget the power of the media....this kid, along with the rest of us, is inundated (I'm sure) with images, words, etc. of what is going on in the world.
Depending on the kid's mental/emotional state, it is quite possible that he is affected enough by it all to sketch that crap. I'm not making excuses, simply reminding people to consider circumstances at least as much as you are considering the kid...
Who knows? Maybe he had a relative die in the conflict and his family blames the President for the death?
Or, maybe he doesn't like T.W.A.T.

In a recent study, it was found that a majority of young people thought Bush was doing a good job. However, when they were asked if he should remain in office, a majority said no. Main reason: The media paints him as a poor president.
I just wanted to post that somewhere :/

The fact that this kid is drawing pictures of the terrorists with Bush's head on sticks is NOT because the kid doesn't love our country. And the reason why people think he shouldn't have been punished is not because they don't love our country, either.
It's because they agree that Bush is a bad leader. It's because they do not agree with how Bush is running the nation. It's because they love our country so much, that they fight to spread this feeling (maybe sometimes foolishly, but what do you expect from a 15 year old who feels he has no voice?) so that people will understand and try to help in their endeavor. Same as anyone that wishes Bush another 4 years. They love their nation all the same, except they have a different feeling on how it should be run.
You guys are pathetic for thinking that your way of thinking is the only way ...and the only "patriotic" way. That's just f*****g blind and you know it.
That kid more than likely disagrees with the war on Iraq, because he feels the way that I do. It's not going to help. It's just going to get people killed, and so far, that's how it's worked. You guys actually think that you're going to convince the Iraqi people that America really has good intentions for them, when we blow up half of their country and take it over? Remember, even if you blow up an enemy soldier in this instance, you're blowing up a person that has ties in Iraq. Family or friend, these people once existed and breathed, and now they are dead.
They are dead. There could have been a possibility of trying to save these people from a cruel leader, peacefully. I bet the Iraqi people feel the same way, and to have our country invade and dictate what happens with their lives, rather than helping them help themselves in a much more friendly way, is probably more than disheartening.
"But omg, we can't do that, sorry!! WoMD!! we're all gonna die or something!!..Lets blow every one of those bastards up and then some so's we can teach um a lesson or two!"

The project was "to keep a notebook of drawings depicting the war in Iraq", for an art class. Art is supposed to incorporate social commentary. Showing a picture of an Iraqui with Bush's head, or an effigy of Bush's head on a stick reflects what he pictures is the mindset of Iraqui's. How that could be mistaken for a threat is beyond me - if he'd drawn a soldier shooting a gun, or a tank blowing up a house, would that be a threat?
The whole thing is beyond retarded.

But most artwork with social commentary usually isn't something that's violent to the extent of having the president's head on a pike. The kid is a f*****g moron, the teacher is a moron for allowing it, and the SS was just doing their job.
And to comment on someone asking wether it was illegal or not to talk about harming the president; it is illegal. Conspiracy to commit <insert crime here>.
