Ya know...its been awhile since I'd read the Prince, and I'd forgotten just how damn good a read it is. If you wanna know how the real and pragmatic world of governments works, then pick this 600 year old bad boy up. Its as remarkably relevant today as it was when it was written, though it continues to enjoy a remarkably bad reputation. Guess some folks just don't like the truth that the world is full of a******s and one really smart one wrote a book on how to be really good at being an a*****e.

Love this book too, highly recommended!

(Funny thing: just last night, while reading The Odyssey, I actually had the idea of revisting it as my next book.)

I like a nice thick, dark lager with a cigar.

I love threads like this. It is like a constant succession of people trying to one up the other on how manly/worldly they are.

Well, it would have been nice if people that have actually read The Prince had posted their thoughts. It is surprisingly relevant, even today.

You're right about the rest of the thread though. Confused

Haha! Not quite. I had the idea to read The Odyssey after watching Troy. As it turns out, The Iliad is like 700 pages, and there was no way I was going to read that!

I noticed The Odyssey was a Signet Classic, which is what my edition of The Prince is, hence it reminded me of it.

So there - I'm not worldly, I just happened to have liked Troy and read The Prince in college. Razz~~~~

Oh! I read the rest of the thread. It appears I disappointed Xammer. Embarassed

Ahh, it was maybe 6 years ago that I read The Prince and don't remember alot of specifics. You know how that goes, college history classes cram 8 books into one term and you barely have time to digest the stuff.

The most striking thing I remember about The Prince is how it completely changed my view of the Catholic Church, and I don't mean in a good way! Very, very interesting. Conqueror Popes who father children, who would've thunk it!?!

Well, I'll post something and try to get a discussion started. Smile

I admit that I haven't read the book in it's entirety. However, I believe Machiavelli's main argument, or at the very least his most controversial one, is that it's better to be feared than loved. He argued that people, as a whole, responded better to the stick than the carrot.

I'm sure others can, and hopefully will, expand on that. Like I said, I've never read the entire book. Sad

Eco's "The Name of the Rose" is a good read about Roman Catholocism as well. It's a real page turner too. Cuddle up by the fire and read for 10 - 12 weeks and you might finish, but I would bet on you burning the book first.
