I was sifting through some really old books at my gf's mother's house that she was going to toss out and I found one I figured might be interesting. It's a collection of essays on contemporary America, published in 1932. Here's an excerpt from a chapter entitled, "Back to Africa."
| Quote: | There are three means by which a supposedly superior group solves its problems with the supposedly inferior group.
1. Amalgamation or assimilation
2. Annihilation or extermination
3. Emigration or separation
In reference to the Negro problem in the United States, the first two are unworkable at present because of certain obvious forces operating in social order. There is a fixed policy on the part of the supposedly superior group to establish a "fundamental, inescapable, and eternal difference," between the Negro and other racial groups. This "difference" is emphasized socially, religiously, psychologically, politically, economically, and in every conceivable way. Wholesale extermination is of course unthinkable.
Emigration is the only practical solution. It has afforded a way out for many of the underprivileged and submerged groups who sought relief from the oppressions and tyrannies inherent in the social and economic systems of the Old World. A case in point is the Zionist Movement among the Jews. |
It goes on praising a small movement back then to gradually emigrate "Negroes" back to Africa. Another chapter descibes all american women as "basically and fundamentally home-loving, husband-loving, child-loving women who get along as best they can."

That would be censorship. I think books like that are important to our heritage, so that we understand all that has come before. know history least you are bound to repeat it.

So you were tossing your gf's mom's salad? wtf? Caesar or House? Thousand Island?
DID YOU HAVE A SALAD MIXER? Or did you just put the lettuce and stuff into a bowl and take two big wooden spoons and like, "toss" it?
These are questions which must be answered with the utmost margin of error such that the equation holds true.

It's actually a very interesting book. It's a collection of about 30 essays from different Americans contributing their view of different aspects of American life: ****, college, art, crime, and dozens of other things. It seems to have been written to counter European criticism and ignorance of the United States (sound familiar?). The last piece is from a foreigner (from Montreal) accusing Americans of working too hard, and not reading, resting or drinking enough. He concludes with,
| Quote: |
The Americans are a Queer People: They don't give a damn.
All the world criticizes them and they don't give a damn. All the world writes squibs like this about them and they don't give a damn. Foreign visitors come and write them up: and they don't give a damn. Lecturers lecture at them: they don't care. They are told they have no art, no literature, and no soul. They never budge. Moralists cry over them, criminologists dissect them, writers shoot epigrams at them, prophets foretell the end of them, and they never move. Seventeen brilliant books analyze them every month: they don't read them. The Europeans threaten to unite against them: they don't mond. Equatorial Africa is dead sour on them: they don't even know it. The Chinese look on them as full of oriental cunning: The English accuse them of British stupidity; the Scotch call them close-fisted, the Italians say they are liars; the French think their morals loose, and the Bolsheviks accuse them of communism.
But that's all right. The Americans don't give a damn: don't need to: never did need to. That is their salvation.
