|
|
|
You are sitting in a theatre about to watch X-men 6.
The first three previews run through and nothing piques your interest.
Then..
The screen goes dark. Slowly the screen lightens. A mirror comes into view. A strange, shimmering mirror with multiple dragons heads around it. The camera is focused on the mirror and slowly zooms in towards it. There is silence except for a scratching sort of shuffle. Then a ghostly voice speaks, "Shirak." The rooms brightens and the scene shifts to various scenes of battle, dragons clashing, a flash of lightning and a deafening crack of thunder and a long silver lance smashes through a large white stone, a beautiful long haired elven girl in golden armor, a giant blue dragon with a dark haired female knight on it, more clashes of dragons. The screen goes dark.
The voice speaks as words appear in flowing script,
"Est Sularus oth Mithas."
The screen brightens again to show a single knight standing atop a castle wall. He raises his sword as an immense blue dragon comes into view above him. The darkly armored figure thrusts a spear towards the lone knight. The screen goes dark.
Sliver letters crash onto the screen with the sound of a sword sliding into a scabbard swiftly, saying, " DRAGONLANCE "
That would own, IF they did it right.
The right characters, the right director, the right script. Perfectly normal people have provent they can completely f**k up a good idea. Watch Dungeons and Dragons or f*****g Harry Potter if you don't believe that. (ELWOOD IS 6 FEET TALL, THAT AINT NO f*****g DWARF) (WIZARDS DONT f*****g RIDE BROOMSTICKS.)
Anyways, just a thought.

Ok. I agree that it is tough to do a movie right, and that they did mess up D&D, but you are wrong about Harry Potter. They didn't mess that up, in fact the character casting is superb in that movie and it maintains the general plot. You may be confused with what your conception of a good movie is against a movie that reflects a book. In Harry Potter, the wizards did ride broomsticks, so they got that right. Maybe it doesn't follow your conception of what a wizard does, but that does not mean that the directors and producers made an error in Harry Potter. I think what you are asking is for a director to shape a movie the way you like it, not do be done "right."
I think Harry Potter was well done given its retraints - not the product of some retarded creation.[/quote]

Wow that was impressive. I do agree with you. It just annoys the shit out of me that she put wizards on broomsticks.

Harry Potter's plot can be sort of tedious at times (Harry finds this, Harry finds that), but they couldn't have cast the supporting characters any better. Professor Snape, Professor Lockhart, Lucius Malfoy, Moaning Myrtle, Hagrid, Uncle Vernon, etc. are all terrific. I was especially impressed with Lucius Malfoy.

A series of Dragonlance movies would kick ass. Both of my girls are reading them right now and it's awesome watching them enjoy something I enjoyed years ago. I'd also love to see Pern brought to life on the screen... but Hollywood would probably s***w them both up.

While I don't forsee a movie series of it due to length, I think that a tv mini series (or long running normal series) for Wheel of Time would be good...

Dragonlance OWNS... I always wished they would make a movie out of it. With the fantasy craze going on I'm hoping they will. At the very least make a WELL animated one... that would rock too. Dragonlance is basically what drew me into fantasy... now I have gotten quite into Forgotten Realms... but I look forward to reading some of the recently released DL books.

Oh and BTW, for those of you who love Raistlin, and haven't read it yet... get the books "Soulforge" and "Brothers in Arms". They are all about Raistlin's life back in the day and are some of the best DL books I've read if you ask me. But if you're just thinking of checking out DL then don't read these yet or they won't make any sense to you... start with Chronicles and then go from there.

I asked Weis and Hickman in person if/when they were looking to do a movie based on Dragonlance in 1995 at GenCon, and they said that they'd love to have a movie done based on the books, but so far there hadn't been any interest from any of the major motion picture companies, and also no interest from TSR to back it financially (of course). Having said that, that was before Harry Potter and LotR blew up and became two of the biggest movies of last year. Also, Reign of Fire did pretty well, even though it wasn't entirely based in fantasy. I think that because of those successes, the major players will be looking for other fantasy areas to exploit, and Dragonlance could be a possible candidate, but the Dark Elf Trilogy would be just as likely, especially considering it is a Forgotten Realms product, the poster child of TSR, and in my opinion the most boring setting of all the campaign worlds introduced. Wizardry and fantasy are becoming more socially acceptable, but I think if they were to do a Dragonlance trilogy, they should avoid associating it with Dungeons & Dragons, simply because the game still to this day has a stigma associated with it that would effect the box office sales.

start with the dragons series... Dragons of Spring Dawning, Dragons of Autumn Twilight, etc.. or can start with the Twins Series, Time of the Twins, Test of the Twins, etc.. those were the first two series that I read, great ones..
in my experience, they tend to be boring in the beginning but pick up near the middle to end.

Dragons of autumn twilight
Dragons of winter night
Dragons of spring dawning
Time of the twins
War of the twins
Test of the twins
I cannot remember which trilogy is first. Guess thats a sign I can read them again. The trilogies can be found in two 20.00 books.
Movies ideas I would love to see in theaters:
Dragon Lance (the ones listed above)
Dark Elf trilogies (Drizzit pwns)
Several of the Harpers Series Books
Iron Man
Alpha Flight
Starcraft
X-men (pheonix saga)
X-men (brood invasion)

Though there are spinoffs and whatnot of the series, there is a MAIN streamline story and though some of the branched off stories are ok... the main streamline is by far the best. Here is the order in which you should read them:
(Underlined/ALL CAPS stuff is the name of the series...)
CHRONICLES TRILOGY:
- Dragons of Autumn Twilight
- Dragons of Winter Night
- Dragons of Spring Dawning
----------------------------------------------
LEGENDS TRILOGY:
- Time of the Twins
- War of the Twins
- Test of the Twins
----------------------------------------------
THE RAISTLIN CHRONICLES: (Optional but AWESOME!)
- Soulforge
- Brothers in Arms
----------------------------------------------
- The Second Generation (Stand Alone Book)
----------------------------------------------
- Dragons of Summer Flame (Stand Alone Book)
----------------------------------------------
THE WAR OF SOULS TRILOGY: (I haven't read Star or Moon yet)
- Dragons of a Fallen Sun
- Dragons of a Lost Star
- Dragons of a Vanished Moon
(Yes you should read the Dragons of Summer Flame way after the Legends and Second Generation stuff.)
----------------------------------------------
MISC:
- The Dawning of a New Age
- The Legend of Huma
- Kaz the Minotaur
----------------------------------------------
I think I got everything as to the MAIN story line. If you have any questions just ask.

I would like to see a movie of the Piers Anthony series Incarnations of Immortality. but yes Dragon lance would be cool, it seems though that most movies that have dragons in them come out slightly covered with cheese.

Only thing I can add to that list of books is that the order in which you read them depends on whether or not you like the surprise associated with prequels. If so, I'd read Soulforge and Brothers in Arms after you've read Dragons of Summer Flame but before the others. Also, the Preludes series is good reading, and should go after you've read Chronicles if you enjoy prequels, and should be read first if you don't. Those are also optional reading, however, but Flint the King is a riot and both Darkness and Light and Riverwind the Plainsman are solid books.

Weasel's Luck is f*****g hilarious for a Dragonlance novel.
Galen Beknighted is boring tho.
I've read nearly all the books. My favorite Dragonlance series is The Dwarven Nations Trilogy, just cuz they f*****g rock. The last book is teh pwn.
The last ones to come out are extremely good. Dragons of a Vanished Moon. pwn
