So the original reports said it was snagged on fishing nets, which seemed a little odd. The later reports I read said it had become clear it was snagged on "some kind of giant underwater antenna". Anyone know any more details about that? And were they deploying/fixing it, or sabotaging/tapping it? Or just passing by?

the antenna stuff was supposedly spy equipment leftover from the cold war.

| Quote: | The submersible was snagged in vast fishing nets and in a network of underwater antennae forming part of a military coastal surveillance system, Russian officials said.
The network was described as a two-tier antennae lattice covering an area of 750 sq m and held in place by 60-ton anchors. |

According to the commander of the Pacific Fleet, Admiral Viktor Fyodorov, fishermen had violated the navy's rules in the bay, abandoning nets which had got caught on the underwater surveillance system. |

When subs are involved they're always reluctant to say what "really" happened.
Google for kursk & memphis.
