Let me preface this with a question for the admins... can we please have a comp tech questions section, pleease ?
My question is about upgrading my dinosaur.
(No poking fun at my outdated system, please)
My system is a 750 athalon (the basic equivalent to a pentium 2), with the old motherboard, a voodoo3 card (way too old to support games), cable modem, 2 hd which boast a sad 13 gig between them. The memory sticks are outdated, obviously, so I will be replacing that ram too.
What I plan on doing:
I bought a Radeon 9600xt, thx Best Buy rebate, a 17 in flat screen monitor already installed, am going to buy a athalon 64 and the new motherboard to fit it ( a socket 754 I believe), the ram to plug into it.. prob start with 2 sticks of 512 ddr, and a new hard drive (120 or 160 gig).
My question is, is there anything else I am going to have to replace I haven't noticed yet, or any problems or conflicts I should watch for? Any way I should do this that would be better? (So far Tiger direct is the best I have found)
Thanks in advance

i woulden't recomend tiger... they sell lots and lots of refurbished items... they're usually pretty cheap, but i don't think its worth the trouble you MIGHT have down the road. go with a store that sells only new products- like newegg.com or something

Yea newegg was great... got all my shit from them. If your gonna do all that might as well just build a whole new system from the ground up, case and all. It won't cost you that much more money and your most likely gonna need a newer power supply(that puts out more power) anyway. And it would be best to get one that has several fans in it b/c all that new shit runs quite a bit hotter.

newegg.com
if you want to find a different store, make sure you check up on them at resellerratings.com before you buy.

Well, you'll probably have to get a bigger power supply. You can probably keep the floppy drive, keyboard, mouse, and CDRom. Is anything left? Oh, the case is probably fine too.

Ok forgot about the power supply thing.. another 40.. and I have fans, but if I need a couple more, another 20.
The reason I am upgrading and not building new is, as far as I can see, upgrading will be ~800 including the fans, power supply, and everything else listed so far. Building new with the equivalent (actually a lil lower grade was what I saw) would be ~1200...
and I'm worried that if I have somebody build the system from scratch, I won't get it how I want.
And what is wrong w/ the Athalon64? Is it not better than the pentium that is out?
thx for the help so far

Built my system for about $900. Intel board, case w/3 fans and power supply, intel p4 3.2, 1gig cosair ram, ATI 9800 Pr0 card, cd drive, 80 gig HD. OK I used my old sound card From the things you have listed there you are basically building a new system outside mouse, keyboard, etc ;p

Athlon 64 is fine
really stay away from Tiger though, go with Newegg. Good prices, decent shipping rates, and IMO great service.

I used Tiger once and it was fine. They're big on rebates though, which are about ten times as much of a hassle as you think they'll be. If you're not going to pay to send everything certified mail don't even bother.
