Tam, I'm gonna get one, a big mother.

Teach me, school me. I'm going to get DLP and stay away from Sony. What else is important?

MY generic TV post....
I finally got smart and did it in a word file LOL

Long Post...Lots Of Info...sorry for the length Wink
Few things about TV's to keep in mind here...specially if you're in the USA.

1. They have not defined the way HDTV will be broadcast and will not "lock it in" until 2007. At that time the FCC has mandated that all tv's produced will have to be HD ready. There are around 9 different types of HD signals being used atm...this stops in 2.5 years, when they come up with the standard. *think Beta and VHS tapes...same kind of deal going on with HD atm*

2. Bigger can be better if you're buying the correct tv.
a.there are things to consider depending on what's important to you.
1Into detail? You want to see the feathers on the wing of that bird? The sweat on the players' brow in that game? Video so real it looks almost 3D? Rear projection DLP is the only way to go. Expensive yes...but unbelievable picture and it WILL hold it's picture quality over time. Be ready to spend a bit of $$ on one of these, but you will not be disappointed.
2 detail not all that important...you like it but it's not the end all be all, you just want a nice picture and quality all the way around? Go for a regular rear projection television. It will hold for a LONG time and you shouldn't have problems with it at all color wise, although you will need to do convergence on it occasionally *about once a year maybe* Lower cost than the DLP but still a lot of bang for the buck
3 CRT's are still the most stable picture and quality out there and by far the least expensive of the bunch. Problems are the fact that they are very bulky an weigh a ton. If you're investing in a CRT type tv...spend as much as you can afford and get the HEAVIEST tv you can...yes weight matters...the heavier it is the better chance you have of it being a lasting investment.

3 BUY THE EXTENDED WARRENTEE. You're spending a few grand on a friggin tv...spend the cash to make sure it gets replaced if it breaks within the next 3-4 years

4 Combo Units *TV + DVD+ VCR or any combo there of* = BAD....it is highly recommended that you buy seperate pieces, that way if something breaks you don't lose your whole system.

5 Surge Protection....MUST HAVE!! especially with the new equipment they make now. buy a good one, Monster Cable, Surgex, Panamax, Spike Master, Tripplite. Make sure the surge protector offers coverage if your item gets zapped. All of the makes I just mentioned offer replacement or repair coverage for anything that's plugged in thru them.
a anything that comes out of the wall should ALWAYS go thru the surge protector before being attached to the TV. ALWAYS. Think of it as an insurance policy for your toys. And your butt is covered if God forebid something happen and things go POOF!
b make sure the warrentee cards get sent in for the surge protector.
c CALL YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY!!! when you use this type of surge protection, your insurance company will sometimes give you a discount on your coverage. Personal experience talking here...we live in an older home, and I asked about this. They sent an adjuster out to confirm we had these things all over our home...he was thrilled and we got an extra 10% off our premium. Kinda the same thing as the smoke detectors and alarm systems, you're protecting yourself properly and they like that hehehe

6 Plasma - don't buy it, that goes for LCD too, unless for a special application like a bedroom, office, bathroom or kitchen. If this is a main TV you're buying, the dependability on the flat panel tv's is questionable at best. Yes they're pretty but you're better off with a rear projection DLP for the same if not less cash in the long run.

This is what I do for a living. I've worked with consumer electronics for the past 6 years and love it!! Right now I'm working at a place that does high end audio/video and home automation at distribution level, so I see and play with ALL the new toys when they come out *grin* A lot of the manufacturers listen to us when deciding what to develope and bring out for the public. It's a really neat job and I love it...I get paid to play with toys basically and make em sing and dance!!

A few suggestions for brands:
Samsung - rating #1 pretty much across the board atm. Picture, quality, sound, dependability and customer service are excellent. This would be my recommendation for consumer grade video products.
Mitsubishi - another good one, nice pic, a little pricyer than the Samsungs
Magnavox - decent stuff...good cost wise, dependable and good customer service
LG - good stuff, good service, good warrentee and great picture

Most TV's are good...
there are a few to stay away from tho. Number one there being Sony...DO NOT BUY SONY please?!?!?!?!?!?! RCA has seriously slipped in quality lately and so has JVC. The new high end RCA *RCA Scenium* are beautiful and very very expensive....the Samsung still has a better picture tho at this point.
Mid range, but still ok and better than Sony...Panasonic, Toshiba and GE.

Like I said, sorry this is so long...ya got me in a talkative mood this morning LOL. Hope this helps some and I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone else has too.

Good stuff Tam.

I agree with pretty much everything there. I sold high end electronics for a while so I would like to think I know my shit. =p

Like she said Plasma and LCD are pretty but not worth it at this time. The technology is still pretty new in this application and it will get better I am sure, but for now it is just not worth it.

Samsung, LG, and Magnavox are great units at a pretty decent price and they have really good service after the fact if it is ever needed.

Mitsubishi is great, but for less money you can get just as good if not better quality and service.

I have not had any issues with the high end Sony products, but never really dealt with anything on their mid to low end range. RCA has started to slip in quality over the past few years.

Good info there Tam.

old Sony is awesome...same thing for the older Kenwood component stuff...it's the mass market crap that's killing the brand.
RCA is having the same issues...
they're all slipping unless you're working with their high end stuff.

For the longest time you couldn't get any better than a 169 chasis on an RCA TV for dependablity and awesome pic....
my rear projection is a 15 year old RCA with that chasis and I wouldn't have taken it with another .

Frash? Trinitron is Sony's higher end stuff, the CRT's are good product, just stay away from the rest of it hehehe FYI? Deawoo is Sony's low end stuff, but the funny thing is the Deawoo TV's tend to be better built than the Sony's are now...at least in the smaller screen sizes like up to 21'

Sab? I have a blast at Best Buy....you have NO clue how much stuff I've helped the sales ppl sell in the past 2 years LOL. And they all thank me afterward. I walk in that place and get GRILLED I always bring url's for whatever the newest toys are and hand em over to the gang there. And yes they help me out too....I get lots n lots of discounts in there now
Wink I've even upsold a customer they were about to write up and had them thank me later on hehehe.

I love sales...I just HATE the general public cause most of them assume I'm an idiot cause I'm female, blonde and have big tits LOL
