1) World of Warcraft
The best MMORPG yet

2) Lord of the Rings Online

3) Eve Online
The best sci-fi MMORPG

4) Final Fantasy XI
The second best fantasy MMORPG after WoW with a quality story, great game play, and large subscriber numbers.

5) City of Heroes/City of Villains

6) Pirates of the Burning Sea
Deep game where the actions of players really matter in many areas of the game such as the economy, storylines, and PvP.

7) EverQuest 2
Yet another major fantasy alternative to Word of Warcraft.

8 ) Dark Age of Camelot
Has usually been one the best major MMORPG for PvP combat due to its 3 realm system.

9) Tabula Rasa
Innovative sci-fi MMO that combines shooter and RPG elements.

10) Dungeons & Dragons Online

Free MMORPGs

Guild Wars

1) Guild Wars - Game Lair
Excellent MMORPG that can be bought in stores, but does not have any monthly fees. Will likely be a leader of the Free MMORPG (no subscription fees) genre for years to come.

2) Sword of the New World
One of the most innovative MMOs in years. Players can control 3 characters at once and all the characters of a player are a family.

3) RuneScape - Game Lair

4) Maple Story
One of the few MMOs that looks like a console game. This game has no races

5) Perfect World

6) FlyFF
Fun cartoonish game .

7) Rappelz

8 ) 9 Dragons
The best in the martial arts MMO

9) Dungeon Runners
Similar game to the Diablo games, and, to a lesser extent World of Warcraft.

10) Silkroad Online
Solid Fantasy MMO with a great historical theme.

2) Lord of the Rings Online

I bought this game back in November and didnt enjoy it. I picked it up again now i dont play WoW or anything and i really enjoy it. Quests are diverse and interesting, though im only lvl 11 on my Hunter so i havent seen much of the content. Turbine have done, in my personal opinion a far better job than Blizzard at adding content in the first year. Entire new regions are added instead of new dungeons, classes fixes are paid attention to and they seem to actually listen to what the community tells them.

The combat system is a bit iffy. If you come from a game like WoW where you click a button and it happens in 0.0001 sec then you will find it difficult to adjust to a slightly more tactical combat system. You can press a button then it will finish your auto attack then perform the ability you chose. It's by no means slow, but there is a slight difference between it and WoW combat system.

PvP is not something Lotro is focused on. The PvP system has a few problems like WoW did in its first year, the latest patch due to be released has a few fixes for it, but it still needs a more interesting system which will be implemented in the upcoming expansion.

Storyline. Not much to say, you are part of Middle Earth and if you have read any of Tolkien's work you will see how NPC's, regions, quests etc.. will tie into the story. For example, in the first few minutes as a Dwarf you meet Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield, Gimli and several dwarves from the book discussing their need for a Burglar (this is from The Hobbit). Fellowship quests along the way later in the game will include more "epic" parts of the story.

Overall it is a great game and has over 300,000 members in its first year, a success not seen since the release of WoW. It is a great game and deserves alot more recognition than it has received, i will be renewing my subscription at the end of this month and cancelling my WoW subscription.

6) Pirates of the Burning Sea
Deep game where the actions of players really matter in many areas of the game such as the economy, storylines, and PvP.

Interesting game. I love pirate genre games but the combat system seems too flowery with sword-fights. If it had a more active combat system i'd be very tempted to pick this game up. The alternative is Darkfall if you can wait until 2009/10 (it will be worth the wait).

Guild Wars

1) Guild Wars - Game Lair
Excellent MMORPG that can be bought in stores, but does not have any monthly fees. Will likely be a leader of the Free MMORPG (no subscription fees) genre for years to come.

Guild Wars 2 coming in 2009/10. It will be removing the instanced crap (with a jump button!!!!). It will be the next "WoW killer" on every forum.

As you said, WoW is the best game at the moment. But I cannot be more sure about it is going to trown of his throne.

I think alot of people will quit when the realise of Age Of Conan will come. I know I will for sure.

2)Lord of the Rings Online

I agree it should be up there, has solid game play and plays a whole lot like wow. Lacks meaningful pvp however, IMO.

6) Pirates of the Burning Sea

Just no. This game sucks really bad, no joke. The ship combat made me cry and the sword fighting made me turn on Coldplay and cut myself. If you want to play a game for a company aspect play eve.

8 ) Dark Age of Camelot

Should switch places with Final Fantasy XI. All pvp games to date have been compared to Dark Age of Camelot because its pvp was invocative and revolutionary.

9) Tabula Rasa

Fun game, to level 20. Then the game ends and the grind begins. Unfinished game. Really shouldn't be up there at all. It is a basic MMO with guns. Really nothing that new with the combat system. Even with the new patch for guild controlled areas isn't enough to save it.

10) Dungeons & Dragons Online

No comment, should have thrown it in the trash.

I almost completely agree with the Free to play list, they are all just about right in my option. I though 9 Dragons was bit useless, but free to play games are not what I play so I will leave that someone else.
