THQ executive Jack Sorenson has come out with a bold statement saying that World of Warcraft has reached it's 'peak' and that prospect for their Warhammer 40,000 MMO is looking good. Talking to Eurogamer at a recent San Francisco Gamer's Day Sorenson commented:
"However long it takes World of Warcraft to go through its cycle there will always be people on it, probably always be millions of people on it, but does it keep at that peak? And I think that, I wish I could see the numbers, but my guess is that it probably already has peaked - but it's still a great business. Who wouldn't want that?"
THQ's CEO Brian Farrel also added:
"Blizzard based a lot of their, let's say, RPG characteristics on 40k, which was the original," he continued. "There's a lot of commonality there that just comes right out of what Games Workshop has developed - the fiction, and the rest of it is incredibly deep. I think if we're true to that and do it at a high quality, then people will come. And they can certainly co-exist."
Is this a case of another publisher underestimating the power of WoW and the culture that has spawned from our favourite MMO? We tend to think so but in a market dominated by WoW you have to be confident or your game won't even stand a chance. We'll see how well THQ's game actually does eventually but for now it's all talk.
There are diverse responses to the article.
One said, "WoW is a juggernaut and will stay that way till blizzard pulls the plug themselves (or make WoW2 or world of starcraft)".
Of course there was another sound, "It does take a bit more skill to kill a moving, thinking target than standing in one spot hitting the same pre-scripted mob."
Well, what's your opinion?

Peaking? wow.. WoW is getting old. Plain and simple. We need something new. New classes, races, places, faces! Lets just hope Warhammer/Conan are good.
