a bit over 4 trillion to a bit under 6 trillion = doubled?

Although it looks like 5 years of GWB got the same increase as 8 years of Clinton.

I think there was an event in 2001 that might be partially responsible for it.

The inflection point for the decrease in spending growth happened around the time of the first Gulf War.

Looks concave up until about the 1990's where it went concave down, now back to concave up. I also don't see why events of 2001 should cause runaway spending increases; the entire Department of Homeland Security is one big money sink that shouldn't exist, and although the Afghanistan war was unavoidable, the Iraq war was a chosen one whether you agree with it or not.

In the 80's, Ronald Reagan destroyed the Soviet Union by forcing them to spend so much militarily that their economy collapsed. Osama bin Laden is Ronald Reagan's spiritual heir. Different God, same strategy.

This has to be looked at from a percentage standpoint as well. In relation to what other figures, I don't know. But of course the national debt is going to go up as time goes by. Its a trend. It has never gone down in recent history.

Also, we're close to hitting a glass ceiling with the national debt. We won't be able to borrow much more money from the treasury unless congress ups the limit, probably with an anonymous vote.
