They removed the team system, the fighting is back to usual (4 person party now rather than 6).

Has the potential to not suck.

Suikoden 1 was original but not great, but original in rpg = huge +
Suikoden 2 was great, period.
Suikoden 3 was feces
Suikoden 4 is a remix of 3
End.

It's not a remix of 3 whatsoever, it's about as far from 3 as 1/2 were. There's no trinity view, the battle mechanics do not work via teams, skill levels, and rune casting times (and wasn't that fun to cast a lv. 4 fire rune when the person had a B rank; tell 2 squads to defend while the individual casts and the 'berserker' types would go in and die regardless)

I like the maritime aspect of the game. The sea battles remind me of slightly tweaked, even more simplified version of Shining Force. I dig those so far.

Every single aspect of Suikoden III has been removed from the series. No longer do you train skills, have to worry about an AE rune decimating your party, having s****y characters for 2/3 of one trinity's storyline because you'd already recruited them with another of the trinity. No more ducks.

The only similarity is that there's no overworld map. Even then, there's an ocean that acts as one.

I'm not saying it's a good game, but you're dead wrong about it being 3 redux. It's a world better than III. But there'll never, ever be another Suikoden that stands up to I/II.

My character is level 50, so I'll give you an idea of what I feel so far.

1st, this game seems to be a huge step backwards on all aspects except for maybe storyline (I haven't seen a bad Suiko plot yet). The graphics look like a s****y version of FF8's graphics minus the cool cutscenes. Some battles (leviathon for example), the monster is partially blocked from view, so you never see its head. The rune spells are just cookie-cutter RPG efx such as lasers for lightning bolts. A few of the level 4 spells look ok.

One aspect of Suiko 3 that I really liked were all of the facial/body expressions that the characters had. You could really tell what a character's mood was just by looking at them, and it added depth. That is all gone. Now the characters just stand around and occasionally wave or act surprised.

The music is about a C+/B-. I've yet to hear a song that stays in my head or one that I really like, as opposed to previous Suikos that have multiple songs on my computer as we speak. The opening theme isn't half bad, but let's hope we get something better later.

The battle system is basically Suikoden 1/2, which is good. The sad part is, rather than improving on any of Suikoden 3's ideas (training for example), they simply removed them altogether.

The characters are all really cool, except that the main character is probably the least likable main character in the entire series. Suikoden mains are notorious for having low personality, but this guy has absolute 0. At least in 3 the characters displayed emotions (except Geddoe), even if they didn't talk much. There aren't nearly as many character-building cut scenes as Suiko 3.

In my opinion, this might kill the Suikoden series. IIRC, the man who was the driving, creative force behind the Suikoden series left in the middle of making Suikoden 3. His abscence is deeply felt by the looks of this game, which is so far but a shadow of the other games. As a suikoden fanboy, this makes me sad Sad

Anyway, for those of you who are playing, this might sound dumb, but I have a theory! If you look at Graham Cray, the resident bad guy, doesn't he remind you of a human version of Neclord? His smile, his eyes, etc. I guess I'll find out later!

You pretty much said it all.

The addition of crafting is neat, too bad the game is so short that I've yet to find a use for it; why farm when you can beat the game with ease without the need of tedium? Had it been a longer game with a lot of extra challenges, then yes, crafting would have been one hell of a solid addition.

They seemed to realize they were making a game centered around a fairly interesting rune; a mediocre game with mediocre dialog sends a rune (with the potential to have some very cool lore surrounding it) on to the left hand of the least suiko-esque lead. Flamer, the True Fire bearer--I know I want to be called Flamer. True Shield Rune--not bad. Soul Eater--ka-ching. Rune of Punishment--uh, guys, can we cash in on a neat, sinister rune... again?

It's just bland. And why the f**k are Jeane and Viki there?

Jeane and Viki are there the same way that characters in movies make a cameo in s****y sequels.

Actually, I like Viki because she saves me days of sailing.

Yeah. I was hoping it had continuity, that, somehow, they actually throughout the series had a true rune. Wishful thinking.

But, yeah, thank god for Viki. =\
