So I put in an order for 5x Opteron 175 servers for our first new webserver cluster. The guy had a kickass price and we've dealt with them in the past. I put the order in around Dec 27th and they said it should ship around Jan 6. Our rep there said he was going on vacation and we'd be dealing with "Habib." After they found that the machines were overheating during burn-in testing, Habib said he was going to have his guys rig up some air duct thing to help air flow. I told him forget about that, just put it in a bigger case. So every f*****g day I email/call asking him how's it going? Finally today he says they will ship tomorrow. I asked him if they were burning them in before shipping, and his response was:
| Quote: | pre software burn-in is same and they subject the machine to 24 hrs post software burn-in to check the stability/ compatibility of hardware/software.
Thx |
To which I replied:
| Quote: | | I just want to be sure that if there are heat issues like in the previous chassis that they are caught before they are shipped to us. |
Then Habib the genius replies:
| Quote: | I don't think heating has got to do anything with software.
Thx |
f*****g d*****s.

That is classic. What are you doing about it?
It seems a commendation of the former person you deal with on paper with a d*****t report of the current ...well, d*****t, would be a good thing to provide to the boss over there.
Of course you could point out how much money you have spent in the past and reference the potential loss of revenue in the future, should you have to deal with said d*****t again.
I could go on a tirade about similar experiences. I think I will in a different thread.

Well, I got quotes last week from 10 different vendors, because I can't understand anything Habib says. It's one thing to have a thick accent, it's another when you can't understand written or spoken English. I DON'T WANT MY f*****g SERVER TO MELT! If you're a f*****g server salesman I don't think that would be such a hard concept to grasp, especially after one config actually had heat problems.
All the quotes I got from other vendors ranged from 200 to 1600 more per machine than these guys... one actually sent me a quote for $16,000 when these guys were like 6900. So I'll give them a little longer I guess. One of the other vendors was a d*****s, I told him in the quote "Opteron 175" and he wrote to me "I don't see an Opteron 175, so I put in a 275," I then had to explain to him that a 175 is a 275 except not for dual-proc. Explaining shit to people who are supposed to be experts is always a good feeling.

Just to throw fuel on the fire (lol!!!), software can have a big effect on heat of the machine. Compiling any large project, like MySQL 5, from scratch heats up my lil pokey linux machine by about 12 degrees celsius.
