K so I bought a new house about 5 months ago. Love it tons except for the kitchen. The cabinets and counters etc havent been upgraded since the house was built in the 80's. Anyway I dont wanna have to replace the cabinets yet but I cant STAND these groovy white counters. Question is, can I replace the counters and then in a couple years replace the cabinets or will taking the cabinets out from under the new counter mess it up?
One last question, my house has real hardwood floors throughout the entire main level. Looks great but it seems like when I wash the floors some of the water is going down into the wood. Im not sure its sealed properly. How the f**k do you take care of real hardwood floors? Shouldnt it be really well sealed or something? These probably havent been taken care of since the house was built either.

I don't think there's any problem with removing the counter tops and putting them on new cabinets, except that it limits you to having EXACTLY the same shape of cabinets once you finally do it. Odds are, you're going to want to be a little creative, change the shape, maybe move things around, and the new cabinets may not be precisely the same as the countertop. Or depending on how old and how standardized your existing cabinets are, you might not even be able to get the exact same shape and size when you redo them.
I don't understand the floors - if the water is going down the cracks between the boards, you're just using too much water. If it seems like water is literally soaking into the wood, you might also be using too much water, but the finish must be shot too. I don't think people use wax on wood floors anymore, they're pretty much all polyurethane. If it is a wax finish and not polyurethane or shellac (which is more like 60s than 80s), you do have to rewax periodically. I think you can tell if it's a wax finish by putting a drop of water on the floor and seeing if you get a white spot where the drop was after ten minutes or so.

The counters can be replaced separate from the cabinets.
The hard wood floors can be done, will take about a day or two per room. Rent a floor sander, go over the wood with course, med, and fine grain. Go over twice with each. Then buy hardwood floor finish. You might want to restain them before you finish them. The way you finish it is, 1 coat, fine sanding, 1 coat, fine sanding, 1 coat.

Yea I think whats happened. I think the wax is just totally gone. Its not like a TON of water or anything it just seems like the floors lack sheen and like soap up a lil of the water from the mop in the cracks. Guess im gonna have to sand them and reseal them. Im sure the boys at Home Depot will help me find whatever sealant I need. Didnt know you could restain the wood. Thats cool id like to lighten it up a tad to more of a honey color. Looks like I have alot of work to do =/. Thanks for the input.
Guess im gonna have to hold off on the counters until I redo the whole kitchen in case I change things around a bit. =/

umm
you shouldn't be using water at all on your wood floors, no matter the ammount
they need to be buffed
i would have them sealed, then it's easier to keep them clean
just before i moved into my house, the original owners had the wood floors redone and sealed...they put a high shine on that seal and those puppies always look squeaky clean
just need to dustmop em and occasionally(once a year) buff em

post pics and i can give ya a better oppinion and make over magic tips. my fav sollution for ugly kitchens is malomine (sp?) paint.
do it yourself backsplash from broken tiles is dirt cheep or ya can get sheets of mini tiles if its in your budget easy to do home project and really spruces things up.
a border to compliment the backsplash colours and a few decorative things here an there to accent and spruce up the room.
does it have an eat in kitchen one entrance or two ? any patio doors ... need to know what youre working with here.
post pics or give better descriptions details.
as for the hard wood flooring.. if its real hardwood you use a dustmop every day light water sponge washes if really dirty dont slop the water on and drench the floor. wax it, with a proper floor pollish once a week or every other week depending on traffic/activity in that area.
swiffer (wetjet) now has a special formula strictly for hardwood flooring, for the love of pete do NOT use the reg stuff on it or anything like mop & glow or pine sol!
is it parkay flooring or slats? usually parkay *being cheep* has to be sealed with a varnish.
PICS!

First off, budget?
Are your intentions to use pre-fab cabinents from places like Home Depot or are you looking to get cabs that are actually designed and fit for your kitchen? Big differance.

Advice given so far sounds as if your advisors wouldn't know a biscuit-jointer or a Paslode if one hit them in the head. Countertops are fit to cabs and the wall at the same time. So, that means cabs are set first, then coutertops are installed.
A most homes built in the 80's aren't going to have a straight wall if the builder's life depended on it. A prefab (onepiece) counter-top wouldn't butt the wall properly. Even if you hacked in new, prefab cabs in under your replaced tops, you still have to remove the tops and reinstall them. Same labor, nominal differance in price to have them fab-ed at the time of cab setting.
Advice: budget the remodel to do them at the same time. You'll probably end up doing a new sink, faucet, and possibly an applience or two. The best investment to a home is a well-thought kitchen remodel. Don't hack a kitchen, ever.
