| Quote: | A more limited look at campaign coverage found that 36 percent of stories on President Bush (news - web sites) were negative, compared to 12 percent for Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites). Stories were positive 20 percent of the time for Bush, 30 percent for Kerry, said the project, which examined some 250 stories for tone.

If they are willing to admit this much favoritism for Kerry, imagine what the real number is...

A biased study has found that, for the most part, news is biased when it's not the news we want to hear.

BTW, what was the percentage of favorable Kerry reporting vs favorable Bush reporting on Fox news?
(can we please have a dancing banana emoticon?)

Frehya, there is a crucial difference.
FoxNews only calls itself fair and balanced to p**s off the liberal establishment - everyone knows Fox slants right, and it is expected.
The mainstream media - major newspapers, broadcast news, CNN networks and so forth sincerely claim to be independent and unbiased, and are in many cases deluded into thinking they are. They are so encased in the liberal elitist mentality that they cannot comprehend that their own worldview is anything but the correct and impartial one.
The best example is the story of the woman who lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and proclaims, "I simply do not understand how (fill in the candidate here - it started with Nixon) won the election, every single person I know voted for McGovern."

No, not everyone thinks Fox News is biased to the right. People really buy into the 'fair and balanced thing' - Fox beats CNN and MSNBC by quite a bit in the ratings wars.
On the subject of that, Fox is clearly the most popular news network these days, but they are not considered part of the mainstream media? I don't get it.
I have a real bad feeling that we'll be hearing about the 'liberal media' even if CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times, Washington Post, etc, all go out of business.

Fox is and is not mainsteam media. They are not an old, established player but rather a new upstart who challenged the system and won the ratings war.
Their outlook and methods are different. You can easily interchange ABC for NBC for CBS, or the Washington Post for hte LA Times for the NY Times. Fox is just Fox, the only major player on the right side. Similar to the Wall Street Journal Editorial pages.

Brian Williams taking over will help alleviate some of the 'mainstream media' hoopla

should that not get reported in your ideal world?
