i put up w/ steam to play cs until i got banned for "cheating"
it didnt stay on my machine long after that.

Yeah, Steam is VERY BUGGY. With the "bannd for cheating" thing.. It happens randomly when valve or whatever the anti-cheat is scans you PC.. If you had to update more than once to steam, there is multiple coding, so it reads it at cheat/hacks and bans you from all of the servers which have anti-cheats enabled (90% of them).
