OK, so tell me if I got this right: The starting locations vary by race, and they are as follows, Breeland for the humans and halflings, Ered Luin for the dwarves and … Thorin's Gate for the elves? I don't get it, why would elves start in a town named after a dwarf?!

Well, I don't know the backstory yet, but this Thorin's Gate is supposed to be somewhere to the west, in the Ered Luin, right? If that is so, it's perfectly OK to have leves there, because just a little further to the west is the Lindon and the Grey Havens, which is elf country. IIRC.
