Just heard on NPR that there is a new movie in the making...centers around Spock and Kirk in their young days...directed by JJ Abrams of LOST fame...2008...

Looking for some kind of link...aha, found one!

Report: 'Star Trek' set for '08 revival
Variety: J.J. Abrams to take the helm

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- More than three years after the last "Star Trek" movie crashed at the box office, the venerable sci-fi franchise is being revived by the director of the upcoming "Mission: Impossible" sequel, Daily Variety reported in its Friday edition.

The as-yet-untitled "Star Trek" feature, the 11th since 1979, is aiming for a fall 2008 release through Paramount Pictures, the Viacom Inc. unit looking to restore its box-office luster under new management, the trade paper said.

The project will be directed by J.J. Abrams, whose Tom Cruise vehicle "Mission: Impossible III" will be released by Paramount on May 5. Abrams, famed for producing the TV shows "Alias" and "Lost," will also help write and produce.

Daily Variety said the action would center on the early days of "Star Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer-space mission.

The paper described "Star Trek" as Hollywood's most durable performer after James Bond, spawning 10 features that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six series.

The 10th film, "Star Trek: Nemesis," bombed at the box office on its December 2002 release, earning just $43 million in North America. Last year, Viacom-owned broadcast network UPN pulled the plug on the low-rated series "Star Trek: Enterprise" following a four-season run.

Someone please kill Rick Berman. Hiring someone who directed one of the MI series to do a Star Trek film? About Spock and Kirk's early days? It's already an abomination and they haven't even started shooting.

Been watching some of the old episodes of Star Trek on G4 lately. The Spock market is kinda weird. Some of the chat comments are funny though.

i sorta liked Nemesis, could not stand Enterprise.
don't know if i really care to see "early days"
i was hoping they were going to skip forward to after picard era
and have some big epic war type dealo and just rebuild the whole thing

i still laugh when ever i see him

when he was first on the show, he did an interview and was making fun of the whole trek geek fan base. Then a couple of years later, i see him at Dragon con in Atlanta and he is there hawking his book, and no one was at his table....

the best ever star trek movies are 2-6, the ones with spock/kirk/bones evolved into full characters.

If they HAVe to make a new one, make one with them at least.

edit: or yes, one with 7 of 9 and Q..that would be kickass

So close, but saying 2-6 includes 5, which was almost as bad as Nemesis or Insurrection.

Holy christ did Voyager suck ass, the only times I would catch myself watching it was for 7 of 9. I hated Janeway or however you spell her name, the actress more then anything. I still remember she was on Jay Leno or some show and said how tired she was of Voyager after the 2nd season.

The show had promise, but Janeway killed it for me, did from the start, just didn't like her character and how much they broke the prim directive drove me nuts. That and if it was the crew of the Enterprise, they would of gotten back in one show cause the crew wasn't a bunch of retards.

They need to make a movie about DS-9, I think that was honestly the best Star Trek shout out there besides the Orginal. I loved everyone in the cast in DS-9 or just anyother TNG would make me happy too.

It would be weird to watch a movie about Kirk and Spoke not played by the oringal actors. Just kind of freeky.

DS9 is sorely underrated, it's a shame. However, the only person who could save a dying Trek franchise is James T. Kirk.

But I'm really not sure I want an academy days Star Trek. It's probably for the OC crowd.
