God damned noisy PCs. I have 4 in my room. One is so noisy I can't power the machine up while I'm home or it will make my right ear noticeably deaf / ringing when I shut it off. Yes, they're clean. I vaccum them once a month and even then there isn't much in the way of debris or dust.
w***e p**s. I need a solution and these crackpots on-line with their $25,000 oil rigging equipment and "hydrogen atom splitter / video card cooler" devices can kiss my ass.
Here's are the tools I own:
Hammer
Set of s***w drivers
Soldering gun
What the heck kind of cheap ($100 or less) solution do I have to quiet down a noisy PC?

Depends whether the noise is from the CPU fan or the graphics card fan. It's pretty easy to find quieter CPU fans, try http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/cpucomparison.html
Graphics card fans maybe a little trickier, especially since a lot of the new ones have all kinds of custom ductwork and stuff so you probably can't swap the fans out.
One of the nice things about Dell PCs (probably some other brands too) is they use custom ducting in the case to get airflow exactly where it's needed, so they can use a smaller fan. I haven't seen any commercial cases that do that, probably because motherboard layouts differ too much in component placement. That's the only reason I might consider getting a commercial PC at some point.

Believe it or not, the noisiest component in my room is a hard drive. Will replace it soon!

Try a variable speed fan. In the meantime, go to the local drugstore and buy some silicon earplugs. I had the same problem with my computer. The earplugs reduce noise by about 25-30 decibels, and it's enough to block out the computer's noise.

Are you saying he should fill the inside of his PCs with brown bread, as acoustic insulation? That might just work! And as a plus, it would probably get nicely toasted, so whenever you were hungry, you could just pull a piece of toast out and replace it with some fresh bread. Genius!

Until recently I had an ATI 9700 pro which was extremely quiet. I upgraded to an Nvidia 5950 which as 2 fans built in and that shit is f*****g loud. I'm considering going back to the ATI just so it'd be quieter.
And f**k these porn banners :/
