Don't they recognize that, the developers? I admit I haven't tried it yet, but I heard from several sources that Vanguared is heavily geared toward group play, to the point of making solo or duo play a poor choice and effectively unplayable. Is this true? If it is, no biggie, I'll just look elsewhere for a game more to my tastes… but I'd be surprised that they would reduce solo to something insignificant.

Sounds to me you've been misinformed: Solo play is still an entirely viable option in Vanguard. Of course, Vanguard (like EQ and EQ2) is indeed focused on the "adventuring party" mode, but that in no way reduces solo play to insignificance. But of course, It's harder to solo, of course, as it should be and as it is in most MMO games today.
