The soldiers refused an order on Wednesday to go to Taji, Iraq -- north of Baghdad -- because their vehicles were considered extremely unsafe, Patricia McCook of Jackson, Mississippi, told The Clarion-Ledger.

They're trained to take orders but not to become suicidal.

Quote:
A whole unit refusing to go on a mission in a war zone would be a significant breach of military discipline. A statement from the military's press center in Baghdad called the incident "isolated."

Isolated only in that this is the only incident to reach public eyes.

Troops get shit on and put in needlessly dangerous situations far too often.

I saw a couple of other articles about this. Funny points:

- the trucks were carrying fuel, had no armor, and a top speed of 40 mph. Also no escort, and were traveling a route where they felt they had a 99% chance of being ambushed.

- they'd already delivered the fuel to one base which wouldn't accept it because it was contaminated with water, so they were told to deliver it to another base. Nothing like fuel with water in it to make you stall just when you need to get the hell out of somewhere. I wonder if the second base would have noticed, or just got blown up when their equipment stalled. Or maybe we were shipping it to our loyal Iraqi allies.

Yellow f****n scum. That's what we get for reducing our military and falling back on Reserves. For the most part people in the reserves have attitudes and are disobedient; most of them don't think they would ever have to actually fight a war for their benefits. As for their equipment being "unsafe"..too f*****g bad; do you're job like everyone else. It would be great if we could have new trucks for everyone but the Dems cry about how much we spend NOW; if you want better equipment join the Army or Marines not the reserves.

http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2004410150366

U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson wrote:
"I would not want any member of the military to be put in a dangerous situation ill-equipped," said Thompson, who was contacted by families. "I have had similar complaints from military families about vehicles that weren't armor-plated, or bullet-proof vests that are outdated.

Oh no! No armor plating and old vests!? We didn't have guys driving around in up-armored humvees and class IV plate vests for almost all of the 20th century; grow a pair and do your job.

Just to hate on liberals/Dems some more..reducing our military funding and the size of our standing army causes equipment shortages like this, and the number of true Soldiers and Marines.

That would be funny were it not both tragic and pathetic.

You do what you're told when you're told. You don't say "It's too dangerous."; no shit it's war!

I see Leavenworth in their future; hope they enjoy it.

Using common sense and ethics what these soldiers did is completely right. But Scrabler's right. A soldier is pretty useless unless they are of the breed that will blindly follow orders no matter how dumb they are. That is indeed the worst part of being in the military. You will not make a decision for yourself until you leave it.

You follow any orders, with eyes wide open. So what if your equipment isn't as good as it could be; it's happened in every conflict before and it will happen in all wars in the future. Like I said before if you want better equipment join the real military.

Using common sense tells you disobeying orders gets people killed. Obviously this wasn't a suicide mision - REAL men had to deliver the fuel since these pukes wouldn't.

the local guard here was a refueling unit in DS
(they got changed to bridges or something now)
i heard a lot of stories and a lot of them were scared shitless
doing some of the runs, but i don;t think any of them
(that i knew) would have ever refused to do a mission.

i don;t know which type of truck they are driving,
if i remember right they have like 5 different ones
anyway going a max of 40mph might not sound like much
but from the stories i heard that was way fast on nearly all
the PoS roads over there.

Do you feel that Hitler's soldiers died honorably for their country? Fighting a war they believed in?

A war doesn't have to be WWIII to be important.

Yes they did fight and die honorably. They were fed propaganda as civis by the Nazi party but most believed it and they supported their leader. Everything is relative and in their situation they did a great job by following Hitler's wishes.

The spin from our parties isn't close to the censorship the German's had during WWI and II.
