So, it's 9:30 at night, and I just got done cutting the grass.
My story is simple, and some of you may find it humerous, so I'll share it with you. When I got home from work today ~6:00, I decided that the yard needed to be cut. It was getting pretty damn thick. Infact, I almost got lost while trying to walk out to my shed.
So I get the mower out (A 6.5 hp Briggs & Straton) and begin the front yard. The mower sounds like ass. Lots of pings and grinding sounds. Wonder if the blade is loose? So, I shut her off and flip it onto the side. Nope, not loose. not hitting the sides either. but there's around 3 inches of solid "chopped grass" brick laying all around the inside. So I break out a trusty Straight Blade s***w Driver and goto town on this rock-hard mess.
By about 6:30 I'm finally through the wall of grass that was living under the mower, so I started it up again. God damnit, more of the same! Ok... what else could cause a mower to run like shit? Hell, I'll check the plug. Sure enought it looks as though they found it in the wreckage of a plane crash. Pure black with carbon & smells strongly of unburnt fuel. Hell, at least it's still gapped right. So, I sand-paper that bad boy down to a nice metal finish (I really don't feel like running out to Sears tonight...) and give it another try.
Well, it sounds a little better, but it's still ass. Very very sluggish. Every time I go near the grass the mower dies down to like 5 RPM. it feels seriously slow. close to stalling, at that. Shit... what else can go wrong?
This mower really isn't the most amazing thing on the market. Infact, it downright stinks. There is no controll to adjust how strong the engine is running. there's simply "Mower On" lever (if you release this, the engine shuts down and blades stop turning) and power wheels on switch. I'm not even using the power wheels right now 'cause I feel like putting all of the HP into the blades and not sharing any with the wheels. Especially when I'm strong enought to push the thing.
So, I decide to take the plastic housing off so I can get a glimpse of the carb. Maybe it's blocked up. Sounds like it's running in perma-Choke. I don't even have a choke option.. just a little fuel primer button. f**k! Just melted the tip of my god damn middle finger (left hand) on the muffler. That f****r is HOT. There's this silver disc of glass-like skin now, where I accidently made contact with it. f*****g HURTS. Time to go inside and clean it up.
To my advantage, I still have a case of sylvadine cream from when I had a very bad burn due to an accident in the kitchen of my old job. This stuff takes care of burns real quick like. I bet in ~1 week, I won't even be able to tell that I f****d up. As of right now, the silver hardened skin-disc is resting on an ocean of blister juice. It feals really bad to boot...
Anyway, I get back out to the mower and see that my air filter is nearly 100% clogged. Baby had Asthma! Pull the filter off and she runs like a champ again. Ok, looks like I gotta hit Sears after all...
So I finally get home (ran into a friend while at Sears) and it's dark. 9:00 at night. And I still have a large majority of the front yard to cut. Infact, I've only done 2 1/2 passes so far. f**k leaving it un-finished till tomorow... Next thing you know I'm cutting the grass with a now-functional mower and a flashlight at 9:00 at night. In the time it took me to finish the front yard, about 15 cars have driven past my house.
Close to half of them stopped and watched me for a minute before going on their way again.
I feel like such a god damn red-neck. Who the hell cuts grass in the dark with a flash-light?!

buy a riding mower
Every weekend I cut my dads yard 8 acres
(he has 17 total but some is pastures and wooded)
and my yard 2 acres
Then every few months I cut the pastures (but I break out the John Deere tracked for that)
For the yards We have a older model craftsman riding mower and a new Scotts riding mower (manufactured by john deere)
It takes me about 3 hours to cut mine and his yard and about 2 hours to cut both pastures.

I didn't bother to ask any of them. I felt pretty stupid doing it, so I wasn't going to question my on-lookers.

I have a mulching mower very much like this. I hate that stupid safety bar that you have to hold down, every time i want to let go of the mower for a sec to move some sticks/debris it shuts off completely. Nothing like restarting the mower 20x per cutting.
