There's no answer to why or why not. Why not use lowfat milk instead of whole? Why not eat a salad instead of a half a pound of beef? Why pound beer after beer instead of sipping tea?
People do things. It's a fact.

But if you know it's not for the best why keep doing it?

Or maybe the negative effects are desired?
Maybe the negative effects aren't great enough to deter someone from doing them. Like sinrakin mentioned, seperation of cause and effect. The effect may be long reached, and therefore is often neglected, or pushed out of the way in order to satisfy the here and the now.

Ignorance. Stupidity. Apathy. Enjoyment. Honestly, any number of reasons could cause someone to implement X bad trait into their life. If a person likes (or think they like) something, they'll do it. As much as it could be the aforementioned reasons, it's all in the eye of the beholder; addiction becomes routine, routine becomes addiction, and, in the end, you have another human being with a slew of complications that keep piling up atop one another. Think: Orouborus (sp?), because thriving off bad traits is simply eating at yourself ad infinitum.
The answer doesn't exist.
Conversely, why does the 300 pound fat f**k order a diet coke while ordering a super-sized Quarterpounder meal?

Started reading Vanity of Duluoz, then I decided to go to the library, where I picked that (Confederacy of Dunces) up, a biography of Kerouac, and a collection of poems by Ginsberg. I've got a lot of reading to do.

Couldn't it be something simple like if you had to think about not doing all the things that are in any tiny way bad for you, you'd have a full time job?
Of course it depends on what exactly you are talking about. Are you talking about things like drinking yourself into a stupor every night, or taking drugs, or cutting yourself, or looking for relationships that are bad for you...
Or are you talking about the little things we do every day? Smoking, drinking, not exercising (exercising excessively), eating bad food, crossing the street without looking, not sleeping enough, not taking your vitamines, impulsive behaviour... etc?
Coz if it's the latter I'd rather actually LIVE a short life, than be afraid to live a long one.

Because they are enjoyable. It's that simple. Beef tastes better than salad, whole milk tastes better than lowfat. People like getting drunk, it's fun, tea doesn't do it. It has nothing to do with self destructive, people are doing what feels good. There's no deep subconcious desire to harm yourself.

Yes, I'm a baccus glutton.
I drink until I pass out, I party like a rock star and I deal with woundering what the f**k I did the day befor.
I enjoy a good party but there is a switch I flip after x amout of booze that say "f**k it, you are going to black out after this... take another shot".
I occasioonally burn myself but that is a matter of remebering specific events and is acceptable to me.
I take drugs because I enjoy them, no guilt, though sometimes I think they can effect my motivation and brain chemestry. I figure normalicy is over rated.
AND I dig women I know I have no future with.
