So, um, what are these exactly? I've see a couple of places offering promotional codes with some of their purchases, but I don't quite get how they're supposed to work. I'm guessing it's some kind of discount on something, or what? If someone could clear this up for me, I’d appreciate it.

Yeah, it is some kind of discount. Some stores offer you a promotional code when you buy something (or even anything) from them. You can use that code to get a discount in the “First Life” store of the same brand.

Depending on the value of the purchase in SL, the size of the real world discount varies
