So, what's this I hear that the SL Herald was originally a news source for The Sims Online, not Second Life? Is there any truth to that? Also, I understand they went over to SL after the character of one of their reporters / editors / whatever was killed on purpose within the TSO world?

Essentially yes, though you did get some of the details … well, less than right. The Second Life Herald was originally called the Alphaville herald (Alphaville is a server for The Sims Online), and they had a number of disagreements with EA regarding some of their policies. They parted ways, and the death of Uri's avatar shouldn't really be considered the primary reason behind that.
