I am puzzled with this thing about Second Life. I want to sign up with free account, but credit card is needed. What is up with that? Free account and I must leave my card information. I just cannot understand how it can be. Will someone explain me what is the question here? I do not want to give my details. If I want to buy the game, then I will give them my details, but now it is completely dumb.

I am with you. I had also seen this strange problem. I have thought this through, and I have come to explanation. I think that they ask for the credit card details because they think that you will like the game so much if you try it, you will pay the monthly fee. That is why they ask for the details now, and to later. This way, it is much easier, so you do not need to do that after. If you like the game, than you just pay the fee and continue playing. I think that Second Life is well worth all of the effort, and that is why credit card is needed at free account sign up.
