I was thinking of giving this game a try I've never really played sci-fi themed MMO games before, just the standard fantasy crap that's been getting old for me the thing is, I've heard a lot of cautionary tales about Star Wars: Galaxies, mostly about how Sony ruined it with an expansion called NGE (what's that stand for anyway?). Should I even bother? Is the game still playable and populated?

NGE stands for "New Game Experience". It lived up to its name alright, it was "new", just not better. As far as I know, about 70 of the original player base had long since abandoned the game. It still survives, though, and you might want to give it a shot. Different strokes for different folks, and all that.

If you never played it before go try it out as you will not know of the treasures your missing from the old days but if your a returning vet then dont bother to be honest The game you knew and loved is long gone.

I honestly dont think it will ever get back to its former glory. Everything SOE touches seems to turn rotten. If the game was bought over by a new dev & publisher, the game could prove to be massive. Expansions wont cut it, it would need to be a whole new SWG 2, better yet buy the rights from Lucas Entertainment and develop a new Star Wars MMO without the baggage of what SWG has. Bottom line:
SOE has far too many projects and not enough time & money invested in them to make it popular. Suppose the easiest way to compare it is Gordon Ramsay fixing a restaraunt (SOE currently have around 15+ MMO's). He cuts down the variety of the menu then focuses on perfecting each dish. SOE could learn alot from that.
