to be honest, ive come to the realization that there will never be another EQ, and as hard as it is for me to say, WoW seems to be the better game. with the added raid content anyway, it wont be another EQ, but it will be great for a few months.

EQ2 might do ok, but unfortunately im starting to hear worse and worse things /sigh.

thus blizzard will make more money with the better game. i really do hope they tune a few more things in WoW tho.

EDIT: im not counting EQ2 out seeing as neither are even out yet, but from what i hear atm, both arent as good as EQ, but WOW is less worse.

it will be the true test as to wether eq did so well because of its design or because there was pretty much nothing else out there (uo sucked ass)

The trend I'm seeing in most new MMORPGs is the lack of roleplay. They are becoming giant adventure games. Focusing on raid content for large groups, and simplified character advacement.

EQ was awesome. The world feels big, and the content is great. However it's now over-run with empy zones, unused content, and generations of players which have no idea about the past. Reguardless of all that EQ is still a level n loot game. There is no way to make a paladin a crappy paladin no matter how you spend those creation points.

EQ2 is a blast. However I still feel like I have little (faction and town status is about as close as it gets) control over my character.

WoW is ok, but still, I don't have any control over my character.

SWG was neat in that you had a ton of crap to level up, the problem was you HAD to level them all up.

SB is a game I never played because it looked like an eq rip off. If anyone wants to chime in on character development please do so.

DaOC I only played this game for a month. From what I saw it was a lot like modern MMORPGS in feel. Character was made, creation points, you go out and level. No skill paths other then the class you choose, your faction was aligned to the starting point. probably great, but little control over my character.

Now, 2 games which I have played that DO let me have control over my character but both failed a bit in therms of the content.

AC: Awesome game, TONS of ways to advance your character. Problem? Dated engine, most quests are overrun with newbies and powerleveling. Buff bots, etc.. The game is kind of like EQ is now. Just showing it's age.

AC2: GREAT game, if only it had more end-game content. Tons of ways to advance your character, tradeskills were awesome.

Perfect Game?
EQ1 content style (IE no grouped mobs, etc..), EQ2 tradeskills (I love theese), AC2 character advacement, and WoW "acceptence".

A lot of games are overlooked simply because of who made them. A lot of people think WoW is the best game in the world because Blizzard made it. Despite the fact that they havn't had a decent game since SC:BW. (well War2BnE, but that was a rehash of war2)

SoE games are plagued by horrible customer service. This fact alone is enough to make a lot of people dismiss what could be or already is a great game. (EQ/EQ2)

Sigil has mixed relations. Some people don't like Brad at all and don't give a f**k what he does. Others are his love slave in the back room. I guess it just depends on how "old school" to the EQ world you are. I am awaiting sigil's game with much anticipation as it looks great and sounds good on paper.

Turbine is a small studio, they don't have the power bigger companies do. However their two MMORPGs are a blast to play. Both are currently undergoing upgrades and such, however I feeel it may be a bit too late.

Microsoft is the devil to some or a bad company with some very good products to others. While supporting AC/AC2 for a while they got their feet wet in the MMORPG world. They didn't really add all that much to the game just sat back and watched and took a ton of notes. Now they have their own MMORPG which also sounds great and could be a force in later years.

It's funny how great things can be overlooked just because of who or what is behind them. People are quick to jump on the flame-horn and knock everyone down except those who belive the same as they do.

Xieroth

I played Asherons Call 1 for about a year, i hada lvl 92 Aluvian Swordsman with Item and Life.

I loved that game, then all my friends bailed. I was in the Rippednbuff alliance on Leafcull.

I am actually thinking about going back. THe biggest thing about EQ that has me bummed right now is the NEED to rely on other players to get anything done. Its all based on the 6person group. in AC you can go out an kill anything yourself really. Its a soloers game. just like Ultima Online was, and i miss that. You cant do anything in EQ alone anymore.

Exactly. EQ had the entire gaming community's ear for years and no game will ever match the monopoly or 'newbie innocence' it had.

I'm sure that EQ2, WoW, etc. will have their fans, but they'll never be as large as EQ was (and fun, imho).
