I thought the story was more like, they bought the rights to something rather than having actually created something.

They may have bought the kernel code rights or something long ago.. I know as far back as 1991 I was working on SCO unix running on 80286 processors because it was the only real decent network capability for PCs to talk with VMS. 
If you can figure out who owns UNIX from this eye chart i'd be shocked really. I can't figure it out and I've been working in this field going on 16 years.

There was XENIX ( 1980, which became SCO UNX), and then Linux was a derivative of something called VENIX in 1990. I actually remember when it came out, was big news until a few days later Iraq invaded Kuwait. I don't pretend to understand the legalities involved around SCO UNIX.. I know the "UNIX" name and source code rights have been sold several times... at one point Novell owned it *shudder*
