|

I wake this morning and see the status of something i dnloaded last night. its complete. Then I go to hop on the internet and my connection is f*****g severed. I'm on a 4 port switch linksys router so I check my laptop and my other computer and they are both operating fine with the internet. It is just my main computer. Would anyone know why the f**k my main computer's internet connection failed and my others are working fine? I know its not the router
my only guess is a virus or my network card failed..

I find linksys routers need to be rebooted pretty regularly - that's the first thing I'd try. Also try rebooting your pc. If neither of those helps, run ipconfig in a DOS window (I guess there's a windows version but I can never remember the name) and see if it says you have an ip address and default gateway address.

if your other computers are working, but this one isn't, it's most likely a computer issue.. just try restarting then check and see if you have an IP... if you don't have an IP, it could be lik ur cable, your NIC, or the way you have your linksys configured

Yeah, I did reset my linksys router and still a no go with my main computer. I just switched my network card to see if that was the issue and rebooted but no go. I dont understand how my other computers that are connected to the same router are working fine.
Also I did check the cable connections, cable wires etc and they came out A ok.
Ran an IP Config and here is what came up:
connection speciific DNS suffix: 17.ecpm.com
auto configuration IP Address: 169.254.69.139
Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
default gateway: <blank>

When your PC comes up, it asks the router to assign it an IP address, and tell it what gateway to use to get to the internet. If that doesn't happen, your PC will look like it's isolated.
Oh sorry, I missed that data - I think that 169 address is the one windows assigns automatically, and you don't have a router address. I still blame the linksys.
If there's a web interface on the linksys, I'd go in and see if you're getting any event or error messages. Failing that, I'd power it completely off, leave it off for 30 seconds or so, then power it back on and see what happens.

Well I thought it was automatically assigned to a gate through DHCP
but i've never been prompted to assign my main computer to a gateway. XP usually does that for you automatically.
I dont know what ever happened to winipcfg in XP But it doesn't work =\

also,
I check my network connectioons in XP, it shows that my status is connected but im not recieving any packets, i'm only sending.
under status it says my IP is an automatic private address which I have no clue how the f**k that came over night when I was sleeping. Before I remember I had it set to specific IP. and my gateway is empty
this has to be a f*****g homemade virus because I ran a full system scan and nothing was picked up.

This means the DHCP failed. Either the lease ran out (5 day typical) and the Linksys failed to renew it, or your machine rebooted and the Linksys didn't reply.
Suggestion: Use static addresses if you don't need dynamic ones.

I wish I could use static. comcast doesn't have static IP addresses though with their service
Apparently the service went down today but what I don't understand is how I was able to connect trhough my other computers on the same router but not with my main computer
=\

goraz, he's saying you can setup the computers on your network up with static IPs. your comcast would still have it's dynamic =)

Or the one port that you're connected to failed. Try swapping ports/cables with the pcs that are getting an internet connection.
As for your IP testing, go into a ms-dos command prompt window and type "ipconfig /all". That will list all settings for your IP address. XP doesn't come with winipcfg.
Also, if you've done everything and there's no change, try doing "ipconfig /renew" from the command prompt. This will force the nic to attempt to renew the DHCP configuration.
Last thing I'd check, is whether or not the "DHCP Client service" is running. If it is, try stopping and restarting. If it can't be restarted check your event logs.

do none of you run XP?
start/settings/network connections.
right click on local area connections
scroll down to "repair" (this is old winipcfg renew / release)
or you can scroll down to 'status'
then click support. and details. (you can do repair here as well)
is it wireless or not? if not, are lights (if there are any lights) on network card and /or router on?
Pull the ethernet, make sure you are getting a signal.
Put the ethernet cable in another Known WORKING port.
"repair" it.
depending on the router you have. EG some the linksys have webpage administration. Get you're manual and login. Refresh the DHCP server. very easy to do.

I run xp on 3 machines and 98 on the rest of them. I still think that xp runs suspiciously slow sometimes considering the hardware in the machines and what's being run on them.

anyways XP is way better then older versions of Windows.
that is unless you read linux/unix/sun/antiMS webpages.

Temp, I'm an old school NT 4.0 user. Graphical IP configuration tools were for Win9x/ME users.
XP is more Win2K on steroids than Windown 9x so...
Command line is a lot easier anyhow, unless you type with 2 fingers. :p

Heh, I do run XP, and I know all about repair. However, I can honestly say that out of the perhaps 100 times I've tried it, it's never, ever, not even once, actually worked. All it does is go lock you up for 60 seconds or so, then say it couldn't repair the connection. Typically because something else is wrong, or else your connection would have been up in the first place. It's microsoft's equivalent of the idiot lights on dashboards - they think they're smart enough to diagnose the problem for you, but they never actually are.
