You obviously have not studied the Arab/Israeli conflict in enough detail Kbarr. Sure we can make great progress now that Arafat is dead and Israel finally has the national consensus to pull out of most of the territories, but it will take a full generation to fix that mess.
You have an entire generation raised on the hatred and propoganda of Arafat (and the Arab media/imams in general), who need to be deprogrammed to treat Jews as people and accept Israel's right to exist. There needs to be a revolution within Palestinian culture so that it worships life and not death, no more posters of "martyrs." To give one relevant example, recent polls put the number as high as 75% of the population that supports suicide bombing. Then you have the problem of the money flowing from Iran, Syria and the entire region that funds the terrorist groups. All the corrupt leaders of Arab nations use the Palestinian issue to focus their own people's anger away from internal problems and onto Israel and America, and that won't stop anytime soon - they need the diversion. Abbas or whoever leads the Palestinians has to be willing to crack down on its own people and take up arms against the terrorist minority. The list goes on and on...
Israel is going to have a nasty confrontation with its hardcore settlers and conservatives at some point as well. It will have to make some very painful steps giving up most of its West Bank settlements, like Ariel (a large city deep within the West Bank that I just do not think they will be able to keep, nor should they)
Yes I am optomistic, but it is going to be a long, slow journey to peace along the "2 steps forward, 1 step back" model.

Yes you jersey boy, don't give me your "obviously"s. I could give a f**k about "studying" the "Arab/Israeli conflict". I know enough to understand that my solution to the problem involves crushing the PLO and all its supporters under tank tracks. I don't see them doing that to the degree that would make me happy. In that sense you are correct, she will never fix the problem.
So let me put it in english you won't feel the need to do a 2000 word editorial on. She will go over there and appear to be doing good things, she will be seen as helping. She will come back and everyone will sing her praises because 1) She is a good, hard working troop and no doubt will have done an excellent job. 2) They might, I say might, need her as a counter to the beast. They want her to do good.
Look out ahead, far ahead in traffic. Who do you see as the major players 4 years from now. If you count her out and cannot see that she is being groomed for that possibility, you are blind.
Obviously.
Unless you do see this, and simply saw the words Israel/PLO used in my starting post as an excuse to show everyone you read about that shit all the time.
Again....
No one really cares about Israel, I know I don't. I like that they are on our side and have balls but if they all got ran over tomorrow I would not shed a tear.
I do care that Rice does good and comes out on top of things. Thats what the thread was about. Not a bunch of idiots fighting over a s****y patch of sand.

Kbarr I like Condi, but the way you said so matter of factly "she fixes the Israel/PLO thing" just struck me as naive, wishful thinking. If you had simply said she makes major progress, I would have agreed with you.
There is good timing now for major progress to happen on all 3 fronts: a strong US President who won't coddle terrorists like Clinton did, a dead Arafat, and an Israeli hawk with the credibility and willingness to make some concessions for peace, but not too many.
Condi for President? I don't know yet. She is very intelligent, but that alone isn't enough or I could be president =p She has to show me some real leadership skills over the next 4 years, something outside academia or closed meeting rooms, and I am sure that is exactly what Bush is giving her the chance to do.

I could photocopy test results from my SAT, LSAT or any other standardized tests along with a photo ID if you really wanted, but no need to go there. I was just using myself as a negative example of the fact that being smart alone is pretty worthless.
As for beating Hillary, I think it is just too early to tell, and there are a lot more Republicans who can beat her. As much as the national media will work as her unpaid campaign staff, they did that for Kerry and he lost. For every liberal who loves her, there is a conservative AND a moderate who hate her - her negatives are way too high to ever win a national race (assuming people do not naively buy into her posturing more towards the center over the past 5 years)
