|
|
|
Came across this link on Drudge, rather scathing review. The source however is the left-leaning NY Daily News, and the author doesn't appear to be a conservative either, having worked for the NY Times and written a bio of Democratic mayor Ed Koch.
| Quote: | Liberal radio is airing bad jokes and worst taste
The United States "is on the slippery slope to theocratic fascism." "The Catholic Church has been secretly encouraging oral **** for years."
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld "ought to be tortured." President Bush should be taken out and shot.
Those are a few nutso nuggets from the hosts of Air America Radio, which calls itself the new liberal voice. The fledgling network is carried in New York on WLIB, 1190 AM. With the Iraq torture scandal everywhere, I tuned in, expecting to hear sober policy analysis mixed with glee over President Bush's political pickle.
Instead, I got 10 hours of rancid venom directed at the President, Rumsfeld, Rush Limbaugh, the Catholic Church and anyone else the hosts felt like slamming. If you're a card-carrying lib who likes crude **** jokes and a cartoonish echo chamber, Air America is for you.
Take one host's linking the talk of "pulling out" the troops with the claim that "that's what the Catholic Church says about premarital ****." Ha, ha.
The network aims to give Dems a media organization to counter Limbaugh and others on the right who dominate talk radio. (What, National Public Radio and The New York Times aren't enough?)
The signing of comedian and best-selling author Al Franken gave Air America a liberal drawing card. But if his three-hour show on Monday was typical, he could sink the ship instead of saving it.
Two attempts at humor were offensive. In his "oy, oy show," set to Israeli music, a sidekick reads news reports - in this case, the murder of the Russian-backed president of Chechnya. Franken's role is to pipe up with a lighthearted "oy, oy, oy." Yep, nothing tickles the ribs like assassination.
Franken also imitated a priest giving Communion, saying "Body of Christ" when an imagined child f****r priest was in line but "not for you" when pro-choice politicians came up.
The church was a day-long obsession, as was Limbaugh. He is an "awful man," "a pig" and "a Nazi."
Color me confused. If Franken & Co. hate the pill-popping Limbaugh so much, why imitate his tarpit tone? Sounds like Limbaugh has simply driven them nuts.
Missing was the tension that comes from honest debate. Only Franken had guests voicing even slight distance from the party line, which is that John Kerry is perfect except he should attack Bush more.
The queen of venom, Randi Rhodes, followed Franken in the host slot. Her imitation of a cracker military type telling a soldier to "insert this fluorescent light bulb into that man's buttocks" was revolting. She compared U.S. prisons in Iraq to the "Nazi gulag" and said, "The day I say thank you to Rumsfeld is the same day I'll say thank you to the 12 people who raped me."
Rock bottom came when she compared Bush and his family to the Corleones in the "Godfather" saga. "Like Fredo, somebody ought to take him out fishing and phuw," she said, imitating the sound of gunfire.
During a day of torture by radio, I heard ads for Hewlett-Packard, Greyhound and, especially, General Motors. I asked GM why it appeared in such shows.
Ryndee Carney, GM's manager of marketing communications, said the ads were wrongly picked up from an earlier deal with WLIB. She said the station was ordered to "cease and desist" yesterday, and added: "GM will not advertise on any Air America affiliates."

Hi Confused, who are you and why are you trying to be "cool" like Khrath by making some random Jew comment when I post?
Anyway, if you want to send me to Israel, I will gladly take your money -- its a great place to visit and their economy needs our tourism dollars. I went over New Year's and had a wonderful time

Really? You mean three billion dollars a year of our tax dollars aren't enough?

I'm not surprised it sucks. It's kind of like Kerry's campaign: anything that exists just to be "against" something is gonna struggle with content. It needs to be "for" something... have some kind of better purpose.

Also, it's liberal so it's bound to be bad.

I've been listening to it since I got sirius radio. Its quite dissapointing. Just like that report says, all they do is blast the conservitive talk radio shows, while emulating them exactly
even more funny is that while the conservitives talk about the president, war, senitors..etc, etc. air america talks about what rush, hannity, etc said.
There is a "talk center" channel which seems to be quite libertarian leaning (not quite center, more orthoganal). So far it seems pretty good, but I havent listened to it much

It's just like listening to Rush... some announcer going on and on about how this country is going to the s*****r, add in a bunch of sycophantic callers agreeing with him.

Rush doesn't talk about how the country is going down the s*****r. He just reinforces his view that liberals need to be kept out of power.

Same difference. My point is that any politically polarized radio talk show usually follows the same self-defeating cycle of retrogression.

No. I believe the name of the show is Air America. I'm not sure what show Vek's talking about specifically but I know I hear one on the cab ride over from time to time, the guy sounds like Howard Stern a little but he very leftist liberal and all he does is bash the Administration. It's really annoying. I prefer to listen to other people's farts than that crap.

Anyone else think that the reference to Air America in the topic meant the CIA aircraft operations during Vietnam?
Cuase I sure did.

Tthen you really should be listening to Stern. At least a few minutes of his show almost daily is dedicated to listening to farts.
I really can't wait for November though. Watching cable news is almost unbearable, and it's not going to get any better. The fact that I want to know what is going on in Iraq is really frustrating, because every piece of news is instantly politicised. Hannity and Colmes (Fox News Program) had gone from annoying but informative to completely nauseating, and the rest of the news isn't much better.
It makes me want to put on Comedy Central for the rest of the summer, but then f*****g John Stewart comes on! I'm about to resort to the weather channel, but I wouldn't be suprised if politics managed to weasel their way into that somehow. I'm sure someone would blame Bush if it rained, and someone else would counter that it would certainly rain even more often in John Kerry was elected.

the network is "Air America"
the shows are something like:
"The O'franken Factor"
"The Majority Report"
basically, parodies of the neocon shows. Unfortunatly, they are not nearly creative enough to actually be a parody

The problem with air america, and any liberal radio outlet, from the very onset is it brings nothing new to the table.
Conservatives HAVE to go to radio, there is no other outlet for conservative news. the ABCNNBCBS cabal have it wrapped up. Every now and again Koppell and Russert appear fair minded, but for the most part, they are all leftists.
Liberals get their news all over the place, so, they need another outlet? That is part of the specific problem with air america.
The other problem is that they are just dispicable human beings. You rarely here the kind of crap they spew from conservative radio (maybe savage sometimes, or farah) but for the most part, conservative radio picks apart liberal positions with logic and reasoning (easy to do) and yeah, they bash, but the bashing is related around the liberal positions. I have never heard Rush say ANY liberal should be shot.
AIr America is just classless. You may not like rush, but he is classy.
The problem is, liberals think it is because of conservative radio that they lost the 2000 election, they dont realize its because most of america knows their policies would do nothing but run this country into the ground.

Fox isnt really what i would call conservative...
its kind of middle of the road i guess.
You want real conservative, you gotta read it.
www.townhall.com
www.wnd.com -> Farah makes me look liberal
and, radio, but at least Fox is fair, and most of their commentators are supply siders (meaning, they know the truth about taxes and how the economy works) which doesnt make their policy news as nausiating as brokov (sp).
