"I laugh and play when no one is near.
Do you think the ANGELS are here?"
No. I think that Joshua saw something when he was little that blasted away whatever intelligence a child has, and he still sees it now, and laughing is the only way he can cope with it.
Maybe it has smooth, black talons that makes skittering sounds as they click on the hardwood floor of the kitchen when mom isn't near. Maybe he sees the Beast, ancient and undefeatable, eyes of orange and puke yellow, reflecting the light like a burning sunset seen over the belly of a corpse.
Maybe it broke him when it first spoke to him as a child, speaking in tongues and tongues and thick silver tongues, whispering in backwards, upside-down languages from long destroyed races, languages that only the Beast speaks now, because to know a creature's name is to have power over it, and to speak it is to command. Its breath over Joshua's face, crushing his sanity, leaving his tiny brain in collapse...failure...ruin.
