Oct. 27, 2004 -- Just like heroin and morphine, smoking cigarettes triggers the release of addictive "feel-good" brain chemicals, new research shows.

The finding helps researchers understand why smokers have such a tough time quitting despite all the health dangers. They presented their report at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, held this week in San Diego.

It's the first human study to show that smoking cigarettes stimulates the brain's production of chemicals called opioids. The opioids are known to play a role in soothing pain, increasing positive emotions, and creating a sense of reward. Both morphine and heroin trigger this same chemical flow.

Looks like you cigarette smokers aren't so cool now, eh?? Looks like you're nothing more than heroin addicts, but much worse because you hurt others!

And heroin addicts are angels

I don't hurt others. I smoke outside if someone who doesn't smoke is in my house, and I smoke outside at work. If someone who doesn't smoke is in the car I don't smoke there. f**k you and your hurting others b******t SM, I accomodate their feelings more than they accomodate mine. The only place non smokers are that I smoke is the bar, and if they don't like it, oh well, not going to stop that one.

more ridiculous nonsense from idiot Silvermouse...

Who sells heroin? Gangs, organized crime and petty criminals
What do many addicts do to afford their heroin? Commit crimes, especially theft/robbery
How do other heroin users pay for it? Neglect their families and children to afford the drug habit
Heroin users require needles, what diseases do some of them help spread with dirty needles? AIDS, hepatitis

nahh, heroin users do not harm others, of course not !!!

I see your point SM, but you're realllllllllllllllly stretching here.

I bet you your car exhaust hurts more people than my cigarette smoke does.

I was trying to bait the smokers with that comment, and I seem to have succeeded, although I skipped over Vekril's post like usual, so I'm not sure if he/she would be included.

There is nothing cooler than telling everyone else that you "ignored" someone. "Ha, I am superior to that person, I shall inform the whole world that he is beneath me and I am ignoring whatever he or she says!!" Makes you feel real special now, doesn't it Silvermouse?

I am a former smoker btw

Saying that cigarettes hurt third parties more than drugs hurt third parties is just as much of a stretch as saying that cigarette smoke isnt harmful to third parties.

I just dislike cigarette smoke in general. It stinks at a great distance and makes my nose run. But hey, if it makes them look cool and sophisticated, what can I say?

I don't think cigarettes have made anyone look cool and sophisticated in at least 10 years. Probably more.

I hate when I'm driving with the windows (or top) down and someone pulls up next to me at a light blowing their disgusting smoke into my car.

It's almost worst than stupid loud ghetto music next to me at a light. I love when guys pull up next to me with their stupid boom boom music and try to hit on me. I just roll up the window and vroom vroom away.

Who sells heroin? Heroin is by definition illegal to possess and its a felony to sell it. Its not possible to "legally" sell heroin to addicts.

How do you pay for it? Heroin is so expensive because its illegal. If it wasn't, there wouldnt be a problem paying for it.

Heroin use requires needles. No, it doesn't. And its illegal to even possess needles that can be used to inject heroin. So the law encourages people to break it to avoid being arrested.

Is heroin use bad? Yes it is. So why are you jailing these people instead of helping the break the habit?

I am in complete agreement with you.

I hate how cigarrettes smell. I hate how the smell sits on you.

However, I just can't go to a bar and drink and not smoke. Maybe it's the beer. I dunno.

I only smoked heavily for like a year, now, I maybe smoke half a pack when I go to a bar, like once a month. I try to bum cigarrettes off people and pay them or buy some and give the rest away so there is no temptation to smoke later. Still no excuse, still bad, but, ah well. Perhaps I will just stop going to bars and that will help everything Wink

I just think it's funny that smokers try to appear cool and rebellious, when smoking is nothing more than a security blanket to crutch their depression and self-dissatisfaction.

strictly from a health standpoint, cigaretts are worse for you then heroin. So is alcohol for that matter.

that's because nobody actually studies the death rate to exhaust ratio compared to smoke floating in a room

*on a break from smoking*

This isn't straight tobacco though. The thing that people tend to forget is that these companies put chemicals and combinations to get these reactions as to keep people buying their product. It's really not completely all the smokers fault in this instance. I used to be a pack a day i rolled my own (no not the ghanja) in addition to dipping. at that time i slept i think MAYBE an hour a night for over 2 yrs. i had so much stim running through my blood it wasn't funny.

I quit cold Feb 8th of this year it was hard trust me on that one but doable. so i don't believe the b******t of addiction for smokes. not completely. a lot of it is mental. And just for the record i'm considered a stress smoker. which is like 10x's worse than a normal smoker especially for quitting.

surprisingly im not. Dont forget I said from a health standpoint. There is actually very little damage done to the body by long term heroin use. Most of the issues come from impurity, unregulated dosages, and neadle sharing.

now, im not advocating heroin use at all, but im also not advocating cigarett use either.

Why do I have to explain things...

/grumble

You look at heroin in a bubble. You act like people who take heroin just go on living a normal life but they just happen to use.

Wrong.

The vast majority of them break down and their lives fragment into something very bad. All aspects of their lives, as in paying attention to your health. They basically starve to death, their body eats itself, their teeth rot, AIDS, other assorted diseases flock to users, then they die.

Smoking doesn't make you do that.

Yeah you can get cancer, maybe, after years of use. So can people who never smoke.

Heroin is a quick ticket to a wood box, if you don't think so... go try some:)

I dare ya.
