I watched this last night. I was kind of confused about one part though...
Harry goes to the hospital because of his arm and then the cops show up. Then suddenly they're in jail or prison and his arm is worse. Why wouldn't he get his arm treated while he was at the hospital? The cops refused him treatment and just booked them? =\

yea that part kinda sucked. i guess maybe it wasnt as bad as they thought and they figured he was just a junkie let it go.
f****d up movie, one of my favorites.

Only thing I could figure is that his arm was to far gone for them to do anything about.

I just watched this movie tonight.. ugh. f*****g ugh. What a great movie. I've never watched such a well made movie that made me feel like pond scum.

can't believe there are still people who havent seen this.
to answer the question at hand: its called a medical ward. one of my friends got stabbed in the neck, but because it missed an artery and he was wanted for attempted m1, they stuck him in the pen anyways. they can still take care of you in prison, but no, it's not the same, and to do so is probably not humane; has to do with flight risk etc.
