My PC has been f****d w/ viruses the past few weeks, and I'm just going to reformat to save myself the trouble of trying to get them off (b/c nothing works!), plus i need to reformat anyway...
Not planning on saving anything...what exactly do i need to do?
When I tried before, i went to DOS or whatever and typed format C:, or whatever the command is, haven't done it in a couple weeks and my memory is a little rusty, im on a diff PC atm so can't doublecheck it. When I did that it kept saying that that program, or drive, or whatever is in use by another program and it wouldn't reformat.
Any idea what is causing it to say that? I closed everything out, restarted, still wouldn't do it, tried it in safe mode, still nada.
What do I do? :/

Don't need to type anything, toss in your windows install CD, boot off it, when it loads, delete your partition, make a new one, and tell windows to install on that partition.. It will format for you.

It depends on if you are useing an OEM , Manufacture or in the case of most computers like compac, gateway and dell you will have a restore disk.
In the case of a manufacture disk you can do like above stated and boot off the cd.
Most oem cds are bootable but not all. If your is not create a bootdisk or download one at www.bootdisk.com. boot with cdrom suppot and at the c:\ promt type format c:\
If you have a restore disk DO NOT FORMAT or you will be f****d and need to get a copy of an os. Alot of restore disks are just drivers and links to the cabs on the harddrive. Make sure you check first.
if you can download all your current drivers and burn them onto a cd so when installing you can do everthing all at once.

Thats because the partition is active. When you load a bootdick it creates virtual drivers and a command interitor for you to use. Even if you shut down to ms-dos it is still windows running a dos emulator.
You cant unmount the drive that the os is running on so youll have to load from a bootable cd-rom or a bootdisk no mater what the os is.

I used two - three partitions.
My system Partition is 5 GB (I'm running Advanced Server 2000) with two 20 gig partitions for my data. Works well for me.
