Warning - this is long winded and it isnt a flame just a collection of thoughts some you may or may not agree with respond away -

I browse these boards daily, reading about everything posted and I often think to myself how much a part of this I once was. This post isnt about me, its about all of us, who we were, we are, and what is to become of what we have built.

Has it really been 4 years? or almost that, since the older generation started playing? I think back to when I was "growing up" and remember Suriya and Dartaghan and a score of others running around allready in their 40s- and thought "one day ill be like them"

How much of that can we ask ourselves has been lost in the transition of time? Looking around, EQ isnt what it was all those years ago. Some say that its evolved, that its better, that its taken its natural course and so here we stand. How many time guilds are there now, ED, Awakened, Pak... maybe im missing one more. What we define "uber" now is having what full time gear? killing quarm?

Everquest used to be unbeatable in my eyes. No matter how high you went or what you did, look back to the original game and even kunark in the early days. There was still risk in the game, what you did mattered. Everything wasnt parsed and scripted down to a 8 line macro you bind to a key or two and watch tv while you hit the buttons. Look at the skill it used to take to be a cleric, an enchanter, a necromancer when what we had to work with was limited, we had to rely on ourselves, our skill and intelligence, and a bit of luck to get the raid or goal accomplished rather then some clicky items or knowing our 2600+ ac 9k buffed tank can shrug off mortal blows like raindrops with minimal healing.

Think back to fear and hate. What it was like to break these zones, the risk involved, but do you remember the adrenalin rushes? the euphoria you felt when you finally after 3-4 hours broke in and established yourselves? What it was like to stay up all night and at 7am kill cazic as the clock ticked down on respawn. What it was like to be one of the 6-7 people with a god item or drop, not some piece of equipment mass farmed every day at X time. What we have become is the ultimate question. People say instancing is a good thing, and yes to an extent I agree. Tarrew Marr is like the New York of everquest servers, were fiercely loyal to each other but we all like slitting each others throats at the first opportunity. I would say 85% of the server is 50+ and all scrambling for "things to do".

Wheres the challenge anymore? You fight in instanced zones that spit your corpses out at a convienient drop off point, recovery takes 10 minutes and your good to go again, while I wasnt an advocate of corpse rotting or failure, perhaps that edge was what drove us to achieve.

So many have come and gone from this game, some are still around in different forms. It is my feeling that EQ 2 will never measure up to what this experience has been. Each of us who has played for this long has truly become a part of the game. We have made it what it was, even though the world has seemed to evolve at sony's whim, our server is our own. It is what we made it.

I see an end of an era, perhaps we are getting too powerfull. 65th lvl with 500+ aas swings the power balance a bit too far. How much longer can we truly "advance" our charachters before we trivialize the entire game?

Then again, which one of us is really willing to give up 4 years of memories, trials, hardships and work to jump on the new bandwagon.

To all those who have come before, hats off to you for making this what it was and is.

To all those that came later, ask one of us old timers for a story sometime, you might enjoy it.

To the rest, it will be interesting to see what is to come.

Hail the Lords of GUK

Well back in the day we were inventing how the game was played, thats all said and done now, its just playing with the given formulas, no one has to invent shit or think outside the box.

With the "VISION" gone sony is in it to make it easy to play it keeps the people who are just starting out interested (mainly because there is competition), back when the game started they didnt have the assloads of content (or competition) they have now so it was prudent to make the game difficult to limit the players from chewing through the content.

BTW anyone wanna help me get a blighted robe since I could never get one in fear farm days?? Very Happy

I wrote an 800 or so word rant / flame to the elitist melancholy spewed at the top of this thread. Then Mozilla crashed on me. It was probably a good thing.

I don't think it was necesarily elitist.

It's just a sense of losing part of what you used to like about a game because things are different now. The infatuation is gone so to speak ;p
It's no longer new and much of the sense of adventure we used to have is gone. Or is at least different... there are less surprises.

Then again: if you no longer play, what do you care?

I don't get misty-eyed over EQ anymore. Sure it was neat the first time around, but I don't sigh and look fondly on those who have gone before me, nor do I shake my head, tears streaming down my face as I recall looting a shiny brass shield in Crushbone at level 12.

Two recent experiences to share.

My good friend Zirak took a year off from EQ only to just come back two months ago. He was in a group when the leader of the group went LD and he quickly disbanded from the group fearing that he'd be bugged. The other four people thought he was an idiot.

I just recently became friends with a 62 paladin. He started the game with LDoN and it shows when you look at his gear and probably 60% of it is ldon bought items. The other 40% is stuff cheaply bought in the bazaar nowadays. Everytime we go to a out of the way zone; Tov, Umbral Planes, The Deep he gets all excited because it's somewhere he's never been.

I agree that there are fond memories of wearing a full set of banded and wielding a combine sword and feeling like you were the shiznit, but all things change. Personally I feel EQ has only gotten better, so I'm still enjoying the ride:).

Dorks.

It was a shiny brass shield (read Silvermouses post again Shank, he had it right) and it did infact drop (still does) from the orc trainer in Crushbone.

Mianya, you beast! You are right. Orc Trainer dropped the shield (which gave off light iirc lolz), the halberd dropped in Highpass and the Idol did as well.

In conclusion, Mianya was cool when it wasn't cool to be a half-elf who's job was to absorb damage.

bah

When I first played it was Mid kunark.

I got a full set of bronze at lvl 10 and was over joyed.

Then had *alsmost* a full set of crafted at lvl 20 with an Exe Axe.

Talk about a happy guy!

Things change over time and its that change that many people never wanted in EQ. Its difficult to define but SOE thought plopping an expasion on after another would just reinstate the nostalgic feeling people got. Now EQ has overflown like shit build-up in a toilet over 4 years.

Mianya was a hot babe. Unfortunately I heard she turned into a bald gnome for some reason Sad.

This "Shank" fellow must be a noob if he doesn't even know where the shiny brass shield comes from. Cool

When I was hunting in crushbone I had no idea that a shield could be obtained there. Trainer hill was just where the high-level druid always sat.

Oh man I really miss sitting on the docks in BB or Freeport for 45 minutes. And you couldn't go afk, either, because then you'd miss the boat. I really miss that.

I also miss begging a druid or a wizard for a port.

Hmm... gosh what else do I miss:

* 700 monks in sol b
* 700 level 30 monks in sol a

oh s***w it
