you'd be surprised how good a computer mic. will record.
don't think its gonna be studio quality, but we use it when i find a pattern or beat, or anyone else in the band finds something and wants to record it so they remember it for later. we just use a small computer mic, and record to a mini-disc, works good for that purpose and quality is pretty good.
and inexpensive

just get a better mic, it's not that expensive.. and download something like sound forge or cakewalk guitar studio, I wish I could tell you more but I have very little experience with this... I record into my comp mic and the quality is nothing above ok. I use Sound Forge 6.0, not a bad program although I'm sure there's better... I think there are people on here though that have a lot more knowledge about this than I do... if you can't find what you're looking for, PM me and I'll send you in the direction of a friend of mine that knows what he's doing.
