Because they don't like the fact that ASCII doesn't have left and right quotation marks, so they fake them by using `` and '', which looks idiotic since they don't have the same slope. It's not like you can't tell the end of a quotation from the beginning by context.

But no, I think we should simply turn the site of the former city into a giant memorial, preferably a laser light show, ideally featuring scenes from "Girls Gone Wild".

If the locals want to pay for it sure. But I don't want my taxes paying for rich a******s who build in the surf on LINY and complain that a northeasterner took them out. Nor do I want to pay for low life animals to rebuild a glorified ghetto that is under sea lv and look around dumfounded when the water gets in.

f**k anybody who said to bull doze the city and move it. Thats my f*****g home. Yes it may be cost effective but that city is priceless with regards to sentimental value and historical value. Raise the levees, drain the city, and start over. This COULD have been prevented if the levees had been raised sooner. Higher levees = no flooding = not much damage. Any city hit by a hurricane of this magnitude would be in shambles. Yes New Orleans is a little bit worse off, but it will live on.

So the next time SF has a major earthquake we should bulldoze that city and move everyone???

No, we rebuild.

Holland rebuilt after the 1953 flood that destroyed dykes.

What an idiot, comparing it to SF or LA, and for that matter anyone else who compares the two. SF was destroyed by an earthquake in 1906 but ever since then there have been 2 earthquakes of similar magnitude and the damage was miniscule in comparison.

In LA the situation is similar. Northridge and Sylmar quakes would have caused a metric asston of damage to it but building technology improves and actually mitigates damage from earthquakes unlike a city built below sea level which will never, under any circumstances mitigate flooding because of the essential priniciple of gravity we all live under.

Yes, some things will always fall down.. but unless you get a niner on the old Richter scale, you will never again see San Francisco or LA in the state New Orleans is in now. And the likelihood of that happening is nill, unlike the likelihood of New Orleans flooding, which was always just a matter of time.

And it's a matter of time for a niner on the old Richter scale. Teutonic plates keep moving and hurricanes keep spawning...nothing changes.

It remains for all intents and purpose a theoretical event since there hasn't actually been a niner in the history of mankind.

Hurricanes keep spawning but was it actually a hurricane that killed New Orleans? I thought it was a levee breach.

Oh yea, I don't know about rebuilding the city Sad Who is going to pay for it? It sure as hell won't be the people that live there. As has been observed in a few threads, the poor people have no resources to rebuild; even the rich people are going to find rebuilding tough, esp. those with no insurance. I'd bet that there are a LOT of people with no insurance down there..

While they were busy draining, cleaning, rebuilding, all those people are going to be living and working somewhere else. I doubt they'd come back to N.O....they wouldn't be able to afford it.

Brother...

If it happened most anywhere else in the US the water would drain away.

You guys are underwater. That is NOT the same thing.

If you wanna rebuild, go for it. I just don't think the federal government, me, should be forced to fund holding the ocean back.

How about the best of both worlds? Rebuild it, but let the water stay. Louisiana's own Venice. If Venice is any example, they've spent boatloads (no pun intended) of cash to control the water levels there to save that city.

Strange, the senate voted thru 10.5 billion in aid tonight for the hurricane. Guess you aren't quite as smart as you thought!

Great post by Kbarr.

Why is that, in all these threads, Doctor seems adamant that a similar tragedy is just as likely to occur in any other area in the US? What is it about geology/oceanography/meteorology don't you understand?

I'd still go for the Venice idea. Throw in a little Venice beach influence and you'd have one hell of a tourist destination.
