The Story:
I come into work this evening, and the acting supervisor calls me over to her desk. She gives me the little "we're friends, right? If you did anything bad you'd tell me, right?" schpiel. Slightly confused, I give the "yeah sure, whatever" response. She then asks me if I remember an incident involving, we'll call her, b***h's picture. I don't remember any picture of or belonging to b***h, which I tell the supervisor.
Turns out b***h has told supervisor that I was reponsible for trashing some kind of picture that was on b***h's desk - an incident I vaguely remember involving a picture I never knew existed and still don't know exactly what the f**k it was of. Yes, a simple picture. Seeing how I've been nothing but congenial and decent to b***h (and this is difficult because there IS a reason I've nicknamed her this), and barely ever have contact with b***h, this is very surprising.
Supervisor agrees that she doubted I was involved but wanted to make sure. Her excuse is that b***h has some serious issues and likes to do things like this to sort of "forget" incidents that happen.
My whole view is this: I can appreciate a coworker having some mental issues, sure. But when these issues can potentially f**k with my job, something I value far more than anything even remotely related to b***h, then I get p****d off. She shouldn't even be bringing these "issues" to the workplace anyway, but she has and here's the position I'm in.
Should I immediately email management and inform them of what's going on, or should I do what a few coworkers have advised and wait this out and see if she brings it to management or just "forgets" the incident like supervisor described? I'm completely for emailing management right away and telling them they need to get b***h and her issues under control, but would this raise plausible suspicion because I'm contacting them first?

i would contact management, but make sure to fully explain the situation
a letter similar to what you just wrote is fine, but with less "b***h"'s =)

I agree with Faer.
Waiting things out in the workplace is not a good thing usually. Make sure you are heard, and make sure everything is writing.
Workplaces aren't the most unbiased places... someone with a grudge can make your life miserable. A friend of mine was on the verge of getting fired because a coworker simply had something against him.
I wouldn't say anything about b***h's problems... they are not really your concern, nor are they the issue. The problem is that she is telling untruths about you.... adress that and be very careful not to comment on b***h and what you think of her privately further. Management can draw it's own conclusions if they know this person. I'm sure you're not the only one who have noticed b***h's issues, if they're that apparent. It might be misconstrued as you having something against her if you make her look bad.

If there is a "chain of command" so-to-speak, should you even be thinking of contacting management yourself? Isn't that going over your supervisor's head?
And...unless the person has threatened you or harassed you in some way, will your complaint even be seen as valid? Then again, I don't work in the corporate world, so I really don't know how these things are handled <shrug>

The corprate world works like this: If "b***h" is a good worker, and has good production, you will be ignored. If "b***h" has been being watched, and isn't making her numbers (assuming you're in a production enviroment) then you will be heard. Bosses have their favorites, and they aren't going to get rid of someone they deem valueble.

certainly emailing management would place you in a confrontating position? I mean, they'll certainly ask if you could come and explein yourself. If b***h is mentally unstable she'll certainly confront you our of work with it too.
Maybe write a letter or a mail, in advance - just complaining about her.
And if she acts up again file another complaint explaining it all?

Keep a dated journal of any events that happen involving her. If anything does happen in the future you will have that as evidence in your favor. This way you have a defence with out creating any drama.

If your company is like mine and always going on and promoting an Open Door Policy then go ahead and e-mail management.
But be sure to only state facts and be as none-bitchy as you can, hehe

They are very open-door, and here's the thing. Aside from hearing from multiple people that I've been fingerpointed at by her, there has been no other incidents, persay, to speak of. I even spoke with her early this morning as she called in for technical support on some stupid comp issue that was above her head.

If you try waiting this out, one friday you'll get a talking to and told 'we don't need ya anymore.' It'll be too late to save your job then.
Launch a pre-emptive strike!

Don't pass over your boss without a good reason.
If that b***h still go on with this story then you can ask your boss to have a meeting with you , b***h and your boss.
If it doesnt work then yes go see someone higher then your boss.
Remember this...your boss is a woman...you dont want to get her mad by passing over her head right? Even more with a problem involving another woman.

But be careful cause if that b***h was sick enough to go see your boss for a f*****g picture...she can do worse then that.
WHo the hell would go cry to his boss over a picture story?

Don't wait it out.
Don't go over your supervisor's head UNLESS they really like the b***h more than you.
Explain your situation and why the b***h is causing problems for you at work.

I would just keep some type of documentation going. Lets say if b***h calls you a "Dirty b*****d". You would just keep a note of that. Perhaps if a co-worker heard it also they could slap their name on the bottom just for some witness action. Then if it ever gets to the point again were she is trying to slap something back on you. You now have your trail of paper on the b*****s attitude towards you.
On things like this it is best to keep your name as far away from management as possible. It is better to have your name brought up for good work related items. If you talk to em now, they might now "identify you with trouble". Which basically means when they see you they will think... "hmmm isnt that that guy that had all the drama with that b***h?" Instead of what you want them to think... "Hey isnt that that guy who gave good head in the executive washroom?" (jk but you get what I am talking aboot)

Fyi - the acting supervisor is on my level, I become acting supervisor when I arrive. She had just been the one on supervisor duty when b***h decided to confide in her on a personal level, not a professional report of wrongdoing kinda thing.

If you did nothing wrong just let the b***h act.
The more she will make a huge story out of that picture..then more stupider she will look. even more if she bothers higher boss for such a story.
In fact if she go too far for that kind of story she will be the one targeted as a trouble maker.
Sit..take notes..do your work.

It doesn't work that way at my workplace, unfortunately. I'm in a position to move up from my current job and I don't want anything jeopardizing that, especially not b***h. I emailed a vague message to my director letting him know I want to speak with him in person about an issue that's arisen - I plan to let me know what the situation is and that I don't want to take any action at all. Keeping the director in the know is a can't-go-wrong plan with him.

This whole situation is kind of humorous though, what a petty b***h lol. I've been trashing people's things for 7 years here, and nobody has ever tattled on me.

Still strange to go see a director just for a picture story...
Why take actions like that if you did nothing wrong?
You look like the guy that run to his lawyer very fast when a cop show up claiming that you did nothing.

I'm not going to tell him I didn't do anything. I'm going to tell him that an employee of his is spreading rumors that could potentially f**k with my integrity in the company, and when I'm possibly getting a promotion within the next week, I make sure all my bases are f****n covered.

Definitely make sure you make this issue known, doubly so if you are 100% innocent, it could only come back to bite you on the ass later on when you least expect it.
I had a coworker once who flirted with a couple of guys in the office, especially when we were out on the road doing system installs. After a year or so her and this guy had a disagreement, and suddenly she's accusing him of several things that could have gotten him fired, even tho she was a full and willing party to every thing she accused him of. He was lucky he had the five other people in the office to back him up, and she ended up getting transfered.

ya man..definately report this in writing or else it could come back to bite you. and make sure just to take it one level up first, as some other people said...some bosses are very vindictive about that stuff
