So, how does this thing work, anyway? I buy some land and … then what? How do I make it "work" for me, as in exploit it for money? Do I need to build something, like houses and stuff, to increase its value, and then resell it? Or maybe rent it out, or what? Also, I have only a basic account, do I need to upgrade?

Answering the last question first, yes you'd need to upgrade. Only a premium member, paying $10 (or so) per month, can own land in the first place.
Regarding making money off the land, you do need to put it to work – in other words, generate traffic. Reselling at auctions comes later, though.
