I don't like how Age of Conan will be restricting a character's class options by their chosen race. I see where they're coming form, wanting to attach a certain feeling to a certain cultural background, but I don't like the way this is done. Shoehorning a player character into a certain role isn't what a Role-Playing Game is supposed to be about. Why not just assing a number of penalties for inappropriate choices, but still allow them?

Because than you get hundreds of highly ineffective characters who found out at level 8 or so that " OMG WTF they screwed up my character".
Face it, people do not always know what's best for them, and they sometimes do need to be "shoehorned", at least to some extent.
Not a pretty picture, but theere you have it.
