How many of you live in a state where it's illegal to sell/buy a car on Sunday and this law is observed and enforced quite strictly even today?

Those laws are constitutional, the supreme court said so (see McGowan v. Maryland).
We have laws that prohibit selling almost anything on Sunday, its a county wide law (Bergen County, NJ).

maybe you missed the part of class where everyone learned that just because the supreme court says its constitutional doesnt actually make it that way.

I know there's dry counties out there but the following are UT liquor laws... for the entire state.
All liquor must be sold through a state controlled store.
No beer can be sold in a grocery store that is over 3.2% (though some how the local breweries get around this with 4%)
If you go to a resturaunt you must order food to get alc
Clubs that are 18+ must be divided between alc and non alc areas, those under 21 cannot get into the non alc areas
All clubs that sell liquor/beer must be considered a "Private Club for Members" and you must buy a membership or be sponsored to get in.
Sponsorship is so complicated it's not even funny.
You cannot buy a keg unless you have a license
For a wedding in a place such a reception hall (for the reception of course) any alcohol must be distributed by a licensed bar tender.
In most counties it's illegal to sell beer on Sunday
Those that can sell on Sunday are limited to selling only until midnight
Weekdays no alcohol (bar or otherwise) can be sold after 1 am. All bars must close at 2 am.
All of the state liquor stores where all liquor MUST be bought are closed on Sunday and holidays... god forbid you don't get your liquor in advance for New Years.
Not sure how many of these laws apply elsewhere and how many are ludicrious, but that's what it's like...

Which part of the constitution does it violate?

My apologies- I'll rephrase that to 'According to a Supreme Court ruling, those laws are constitutional'. But, since the Supreme Court does think it's constitutional, and has thought so for forty years, there are such laws, and they are enforced.
Anyways, I don't see it as a first amendment violation, you can practice whatever religion you want, even if you can't buy a car/t-shirt/beer on Sundays.
I don't really see why you can't buy a car (but I assume anything else) on a Sunday- our blue laws where I live are sometimes good since Bergen County is one of the most densely populated counties in the country- many still support them due to traffic concerns. Some towns around here have four malls in a five mile radius.

The first amendment says (to paraphrase) that the government may not legislate religion. No business on the Sabbath is a religious observance.
| Moses wrote: |
8 Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. 9Six days you shall labor and do all your work. 10But the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work--you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. 11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it.
|
The Supreme Court said it was OK by making the argument that Sunday closing laws were not actually motivated by religion, which is somewhat incredible.
