I'm really happy with my 20D Canon so far, just using the lens that comes with it and i got some nice shots.
What i'm looking for now is a good zoom lens.
This camera is great if your near your subject but if you are in say a stadium/racetrack etc well you cant see d**k if it's not a panorama shot
Can any of you recommend a GOOD zoom lens. It doenst' have to be hte most expensive but the best quality of shot, durability and ease of use.
Thanks in advance for any tips )

I probably have the same lens as you
17-85?
I was going to buy the 20D myself, but I ended up buying the digital redel XT 350D. Slightly cheaper, but still a high end 8.2 megapixle camera.
As for lenses, check out THIS link

I know some pros that have the 20D as a second body, and they seem happy with it. I hear its not compatible with all older Canon AF lenses.
My best all around workhorse zoom lens is the 70-200 f2.8 L. ($1200)
Its a pro level lens, BUT you can get the f4 for quite a bit less. Its quality glass and glass makes the difference!
Check out KEH on the net for good used and new lenses. I shop with them alot. the prices on those links in this thread are HIGH.
I have a Canon 28-105 f4 that is decent. Maybe cost me $250 or so slightly used.
BTW, I picked up a canon 100-300 zoom for my second body as an emergency back up, but its pretty crappy inherently especially compared to the 70-200. In fact I hate it.
Also realize that digital SLR's have a multiplier of umm 1.3 or something.. so your zoom is actually zoomier than the lens says it will be.
Dont kid yourself, the Digital Rebel isnt high end, its low end of the SLR digital scale, but fine enough for most amateurs. The big difference is that it is not built for as much use as a pro level body would get. Its pretty light and not insulated against moisture and dust. The sensor is 8.3mpx but its not the same kind of sensor as the high end jobbies.
It also has considerably more shutter lag, but that only matters to people that shoot sports 'n such.
Not to burst your bubble, or to be rude, I am sure it works fine for your needs, its just when ranked with the $4500 bodies, or even the 20D price range, there is a reason for that difference in price.

at first I thought that said "Ask Germany", and I was like "hey, Germany must produce some good photos"
In fact I think you should just change it to Ask Germany, because let's face it - comedy is more fun than being helpful

Well, I dont consider the digital rebel a recreational camera. So ya, I would consider it a higher end. Not the highest end, just higher end.
Thats the camera I was told to buy for my 2 year digital photography course in September (International Academy of Design and Technology). The photographer there told me there was hardly any difference between the rebel and the 20D, and that I would get the better deal with the Rebel.
I didnt want to go all out on a $3000+ camera until I finished.
Digital rebel xt cost me $1300 (Canadian, $1600 with the 17-85 lens, bag, and 512 card) while the 20D was going for $1800. Thats not a huge price difference.
I was on the fence between the rebel and 20d for about a month, until I was talking to a photographer friend of my aunt and the guy at IADT. Both told me to go with the Rebel.
I guess its all in personal opinion

Actually, no its not about personal opinion, its about understanding how the cameras are actually working inside...all that technical stuff about sensor sizes and calibrations, AF markings and what area they are able to fall into on a sensor etc etc etc. For example... just one aspect of the differences that most of us rarely consider let alone think about:
The focusing screen of all SLRs below the top tiers of their manufacturers have a fair amount of slop in the horizontal plane (no slop in the vertical plane, where precision is required for focusing). Production and assembly is much cheaper if a part only has to be precise in one aspect. Various camera bodies within a manufacturers line are priced a certain way for a reason.
It goes over my head for the most part, but I do try to read up on some of these intricacies before I buy a camera that I rely on to make my bread and butter.
In order to avoid any kind of anal retentive thread on how Canon has built their line of cameras and priced them, I'll just agree that you most likely have an adequate camera and the better deal, yes, for your schooling.
and grats on the 2 year course. sounds like a really neat opportunity.

after reading all the reviews on multiple lenses i think the 70-200 f2.8 L i just a tad to pricey for my skill level.
Looks like i'm going to get this :
70-200 f4.0 L
Perhaps with a 1.4 extender..
Thanks for the tips frehya!
I should just PM you next time heh

House prices suck donkey d**k in VA.
For a shithole you're lookin to pay $300k+ right up to $800k+ for something large(5,000+sf), but without a yard.
Even WV is getting up there in prices, as it's turning into the VA/DC burbs.
