Anyone ever do this? I've read up a little on it and understand there is essentially 75 days after the domain expires to be able to actually grab it. I also understand there are 3 major clearinghouses for this, and it can turn into a blind bidding war.
Anyone actually successfully grab a good expired domain?

it is very hard to do, and often the people who own the domain renew it faster than you can try and register it.

To: All Domain Name Speculators:
Have you always wondered how to get your hands on some of the great domain names that drop each day? Each day approximately 20,000 domain names become available for registration. Domain names drop because the current owners forget to renew, renew notices are lost in the mail, owners lose interest in the name, and a host of other reasons. Many of these domain names are extremely valuable based on their consistent traffic and presence in the search engines. Thats where our product comes into play... Read below to see how it works.
Domain Grabber is a fully automated domain name registration program that sends registration attempts to the registrar eNom. The user simply inputs what domain names they want to try and "snap" and the software will do the rest! Users can input a start and end time, or select for automated registration submissions to start immediately. All domains are registered in the eNom account specified within the software. Now anyone can attempt to get high-class domain names the second they expire! This version now supports IDN domain names!
Moniker Domain Name Grabber (new) We are now offering the exact same Name Grabber using Moniker. This application works exactly the same, except it uses Monikers registrar instead of eNom. As you read the details below you can decide if you prefer eNom or Moniker.

or they are auto renewed.. one of the easier ways to get not neccissarily good names is through the various services that offer to place the order if it becomes available however you will never get domains that are considered "good" per say.
Have had a friend get addsupport and sentryhost through those lists that services like DirectNIC sends out. They email a list out every so often when domains expire and are available. Those two, while decent names, weren't exactly household names.
What you REALLY want, which was the case when those two domains were purchased, is to get an "established" domain that was fairly well circulated through external links in that can be assumed by you for instant traffic, even if it isn't 100% applicable.
AddSupport.com (was a foot doctor's site)
It was set to become a managed services site for small hosting companies. It still translated into traffic though increasing your relavence on engines like Alexa.... oh shit, I have said too much without invoicing you, sorry...

oh and existing search engine rankings wont really help your new site too much unless you make a concerted effort to manage that incoming traffic properly...
