Are Vista and Direct X required for this game to work at all, or work satisfactorily, or what? I heard before that if I could play Oblivion OK (which I could), I should be able to play Age of Conan as well, but now I know my machine's not good enough to run Vista properly, so … is having the OS a requirement for AoC or just a "bonus"?

The latter. From the FAQ:
"The game is designed to work with Windows Vista and its DirectX 10, but those systems (while they boost top-end performance) are not required."
So, you should still be OK.
