Haha yep, like I said, OMGZ ONLY THE PUNK MUSIC I LISTEN TO IS REALLY PUNK MUSIC!!!

Reminds me of those pre-pubescant douches way back in middle school that thought they were badasses because they still listened to cheesy 80's rock like AC/DC. "Hey I listen to music that was made 20 years before your music was made and therefore is superior and you are ignorant for preferring something else."

Ha.

hah Devook

I think all punk sucks -- I listen to music for the actual musical value, not to hear some whiny b***h screaming at hte top of his lungs how much society sucks and he is never going to grow up or become part of the system. The vast majority of punk, and all "genuine punk" is seriously lacking in harmony and other things that make music pleasant to listen to.

And I listen to even older music, most of it made before I was born -- the classic rock of the late 60s and early 70s. Guess you hate me too !!

Your taste in music. Listen to music because you like how it sounds, not because you want to convey a certain image.

f**k THE SYSTEM, DOWN WITH THE MAN, PUNK 4EVA!!

A fairly high percentage of rock music performed by younger bands involves rebellion against authority or a critique of societal norms - punk was just 1 version that featured stripped down music and screeching vocals. Even some of the teen-pop is about "punk" subject matter.

Hell, 1 of the originators of the punk style was the Ramones, and they were more silly than anything.

If you're attempting to reflect this comment on me it's completely unfounded. I realize what elitism is, but, once more, I also realize what complete ignorance is.

Call something punk--great, I've got no qualms with that. But to say 'Punk Is:' is yet another unfounded statement. And, moreover, to say punk is any number of whiny singers? Please. That's like saying anyone who's tan just must be Mexican.

Punk subject matter? The hell are you talking about? As if the entirety of the genre had one singular statement? It was on a person by person basis, period. You have Darby Crash. You have GG Allin. Then you have Ian MacKaye. Then you have Greg Graffin. And somewhere in the middle are the Ramones. Beyond that lies extremists (some say poor musicians, but undermined talent doesn't exactly say everything) like Crass.

Man, this, as I said, is simply self-defeating. And it always has been.

Ding Ding, we have a winner.

I was a 100% deadhead in college, listened to all the hippy music, wore cords and birkenstocks...

And was an outspoken libertarian/Republican. I listened because I enjoyed the music, wore some of the clothes because they were comfortable.

Cliff Notes:

New Punk(which is what I was referring to):
Whiny teenagers hate the world but love their girlfriends. Guitar is simple intros and a couple chords.
Ex. Billy Talent, Blink 182, Good Charlotte, NewFound Glory, Sugarcult, blah blah blah

Old Punk(which is what Gethy/Syke/Kenbin were referring to):
Whiny tweenagers hate the world. Guitar is simple intros and a couple chords.
Ex. Black Flag, Ramones, Youth Brigade, Bad Brains, Descendents, Minor Threat, GG Allen, blah blah blah

Point still stands that Billy Talent - River Below has an awesome intro.
Point still stands that Gethy is a wiener.

What's funny is that in 20 years people like Gethy and Syke are going to be all like "OMG Billy Talent and Good Charlotte were awesome and the only true punk, this new stuff sucks!!!!"

I'm bored.

Ah, lay off. I'm not claiming to know everything or anything at all. I was never there. It's a world apart from the 'scene' I experienced as an early teen. Shit changed, and, damn, do I not know that full well?

I know I took your quote out of context, but who said I didn't agree with you to hell and back about it? There's no reason one's vanity should portray what the ears desire.

Hm, and being opinionated makes someone an 'expert'? Well, damn, let's dig up all the threads you've waxed intellectual in throughout the years. I'm sure it'd plateu with you and Mugaaz around the same number.

Punk is shit. It's the worst form of "music" in the world next to rap, and I'd probably listen to rap over punk.

Punk is just no-talent garbage played by teens who want desperately to have a strong opinion or men in their 30's who desperately want teens to look up to them.

And that's final!

Even you agree that it's not real punk. Vek, people that liked punk when it was punk and not "emo punk" or "pop punk" or "whiny little f*g b***h singing with a guitar, punk" are the people that take pride in the punk of old. It appeals to them more than the new shit...to each their own, but these newer bands are changing the meaning of the word punk and murdering it with talk about girls and relationships, and whiny f*g talk.... much like Devook pointed out. The entire mood has changed, and you can't deny that. Maybe I'm being closed minded about it...or maybe it's just whiny little f*g b***h talk that comes from rich kids with guitars. Razz f**k, every major music company even agrees that the mood has changed, because they've labelled this new punk as "emo" or "pop" etc.. You see it referred to as this in magazines and other venues as well..

And Devook, are you kidding me? If anyone here is going to be praising Billy Talent for being "real punk" in 20 years, it's going to be you. I'll continue on in life having the same opinion I do now and it's not going to change. I would never consider this new pop punk shit to be real punk, because they just aren't, I know where it's roots originated and I know where MTV has taken it, and I didn't like it from the beginning.

I'm not saying some of these artists don't have talent, because they do, but it's just not my style.

i would suggest anything NOFX, Bad religion. If you want some hard punk guitar listen to Strung Out.

Strung out has some sick guitar and bass. Cult of the Subterranian is a great song along with Betrayal. NOFX has some great guitar. I'm guessing by punk they listen to more emoish type bands, since that's what's been considered punk lately. Letter Kills for example has some decent guitar, but I'm not sure I'd classify them as punk. Same with My Chemical Romance. Bad Religion is a good call too like Bronze said and they're definately punk.

Not really, it's going to be the guys that listen to music not because it suits their tastes but because they think it's cool to do. Mall punks, if you will. I like Billy Talent because I like the music, I could care less what you want to qualify it as.

I implore you to do so. Infact, I heard this band 'Social Distortion' is touring--LOL what kind of name is that!--and I think it'd be best if you went up to the biggest, baldest guy there and said, "Billy Talent is punk lol!"

He'd be your best friend, I swear to god.

I think most of what you wrote is legit. Yes, punk is lame as can be but it still can be broken down. I've never heard Billy Talent or whatever so I dont know wtf you guys are talking about.

Theres always going to be a place in my heart for Sub-Humans, Black Flag, DK, THE RAMONES, Circle Jerks, ect. When it all boils down, were they all pretty much just cheezy punk bands? Yea. But I can throw any of them on and still sing a long and tap my foot and not give a f**k about what anyone else thinks about it. Thats what music should be to everyone. It's easy to put down someone elses musical taste. It's harder to explain yours.
