Long story ...

I had to do a few courses in Canada to get my certification (they don't recognize some of my belgian credits) so I started them 2 years ago. I did really well on all of them, except Business Economics. I started the course in February, and had a midterm in April. I scored 36/40, and my assignement I scored a 16/20.

Now after my midterm my prof didn't show up for 4 classes, started scheduling make-up classes, but didn't show up for those either.
When he did show, he cut classes short because of back-pains, sometimes only came in for an hour. He promised to post the material that we should of covered on his website. His website however, was never up. When my second assigmenent came up, he only brought a few outline-papers, and I never received one. He told me to email him, and he'd send it. When I did, he replied "ask the university, I'm not a paper-dispenser". I sent the bus. departement an email, but didn't receive it a week after, so before next class I went in early, and asked to copy the outline from him. He then said "I can explain you what's required after class over a drink ...?!?!"

I declined and made a formal complaint to the university (not even mentioning his drink-offer). Next class he addresses me in a full class, yelling, screaming and saying "I won't pass with that attitude". Between that day and my final, he didn't show up for classes twice again, saying he had to be at a marriage, blablabla. My final comes, and I finally receive my marks in September. I failed the course with 49.9%. I immediatly paid the fees to have my exam reviewed. I got an appointement, and went in. Half of my exam was missing, only the multiple question part was in their possesion. I made a complaint to the registrar, and a few weeks after they sent me a cheque for $280. I'm too stubborn to cash it, and am wondering if there's anything else I can do. In my stats class there's 4 people that are in his course now, complaining about the same thing I was. BUT, he decided to let people take their finals with open book, because the average was below 50%. It p****s me off ... What could I possibly do?

I did a search on student rights in Ontario, but nothing popped up. The ombudsman of U of T said I had to figure this out with the business departement. They say Mr. Siddiqui (my prof) has done nothing wrong. He's the only one teaching this course, so redoing it is not an option. I even asked for a detailed outline of what the course entails (spelling?) so I could take it at York, but they refused to do so.

I can't afford a lawyer, I'm happy I could afford all my courses =/

Aren't there grievance committees at colleges? Document EVERYTHING and see if you can get the others who have experienced the same thing to document their experiences as well.

Then, go see the Chancellor Smile

Together you are stronger.

Gather up the other students who have the same problem and adress the proper people at school with your problem.

There must be some kind of grievance committee like Princi said.

If not: see if you can contact some kind of student organisation who can lobby for you.

It might also help to maybe get one of your other professors to say something. Dunno if you have someone who you can confide in and who'll want to help, but if you can, it would help to have a teacher on your side.

What's the cheque for? The fees for the class?
Try to get them to let you have another exam (not do the classes again) if you think you can pass it.

Cheque is 1/3th of what the class cost me. The only thing I have been asking for ... is to rewrite my exam, they won't let me.

Hello Greet Gemels:

The Business Program Office has forwarded your e-mail to me so that I may reply on behalf of the Assistant Director and Registrar, who is away from the Office until January 2005.

I understand from your e-mail that you would like to obtain a photocopy of
your final examination answers for course SCS 0082-008 Business Economics.

Unfortunately the School will be unable to supply you with a copy of your
final examination as there is a deadline for obtaining a copy, within three
months of the final examination/course completion period.

I regret that this reply could not be more favourable.

Susan Allen
Office of the Assistant Director and Registrar

I can't even get a copy of my exam. I was able to look at it, and from there on it took them over 3 months to give me an answer to my complaint, therefore the time to get a copy has expired. It's madness =/

And it's in Toronto, Ontario. (University of Toronto)[/quote]

Well that's just retarded.

I guess you can try to go to some student organisation, but maybe more trouble then it's worth?

It's more trouble then it's worth, but I'm a real b***h when it comes to this kind of stuff. I will do everything I can to fix this, I paid the course, I attended it, passed the exam and I already have the credit in Belgium. I just don't know "how to fix" it yet =/

And yeah, Greet Gemels is my name =/
