As a speaker of both english and spanish it doesnt p**s me off. Its a smart move business wise. Im sure theres going to be those arguements that this is the USA and folks should know our language but the fact of the matter is, we're here, and we're here to stay. Miami is already ours, and you can probably add any state that shares a border with Mexico to that list of invaded states. From a business perspective its a wise move to cater to all audiences. All audiences ='s more $.
However, the one thing you neglected to mention in the OP is why it p****s you off. Discuss.

Yeah, it p****s me off too. My time gets wasted enough without having to explain several times a day that yes, I speak the national language. I'd accept it in obviously tourist-oriented contexts, but not from banks and gas stations. Nothing against immigrants, but learn the f*****g language for God's sake, or go home.

It never occurred to me to even consider upsetting myself over something like this. I'm trying to find a reason to be upset my banks are large enough to do business somewhere other than Main Street, Podunkville, North Carolina. It's not working.

A lot of places are playing around with voice recognition now. You don't "press 1", you say "english".
However I guess the point of your complaint is that since english is spoken by the vast majority of callers in the US, they should assume english, and have an option to press or say something to change that.
I can't argue. I generally press "0", myself, in an attempt to talk to a warm body, anyway.

Maybe I'm missing some key lesson in English. The use of 'myself' in your sentence is nil. Please justify your brain pollution!

If you don't think 8 seconds of your time is worth something, then you don't value your time highly enough

That was a really predictable, stale and useless reply. I'm not saying you are predictable, stale and useless - just that your reply was.
It is impossible to account for every moment of your time. To think that simply because you plan or monitor your seconds, minutes and hours that you somehow value them more is absolutely absurd.
"I'm going to bed at exactly 11:21:06 tonight! By gosh! Because those extra 8 seconds before 11:21:14 are valuable!"

Ok grammar cop. You win. It shouldn't have been in there.
/bows head in shame....
"Myself" in that sentence may be redundant or unnecessary, or even grammatically incorrect - but "nil"? Ahem.

Don't admit defeat so fast. "I, myself, generally presss '0'" is certainly accepted usage for emphasis, and found in the dictionary. I don't see why you can't move the word to the other side of the clause.

Agreed, but I think it's more commonly used verbally than it is written. Standing back from it and reading it over, it does look kind of wonky.
Now on the other hand, "Nil", in the context you've employed it - aw never mind.

It's good for business. Businesses who can communicate with their customers in their language of choice tend to do better with those demographics.
There is one thing I find funny about this whole language issue. No one here complains about English taking root and being taught and permeating various aspects of life in other countries, only when it happens here. Do you care that in Mexico you have to hit 1 for Spanish? No? Well, apparantely they don't either.
Touché. Welcome to the new global economy.

It upsets me because if I relocated to another country and intended to live there on a permanent basis, I'd learn their native language.
It's a lack of respect, but why should they respect us, we don't have enough pride to not cave into the b******t. "Oh it's good for the economy"... waaaaa waaaaaa waaaaa.

That's not the issue.. the issue is if you moved to another country and you intended to live there on a permanent basis but if English language menus were still available to you in some areas - would you use them? Honestly?
Does it upset you to know that most any country you go to in the world now you can have access to English-language services as well? Do you not consider that disrespectful as well?
I'll tell you what.. you complain to the government to discourage English use in foreign countries, and I'll complain to our government to revert to only English in this one. Ok?

I can't say for sure. The lazy side of me says of course. The idealistic side of me says no. The reality is I probably would until I was able to learn the language. But what it doesn't mean is that I wouldn't learn the language and thus have no need for the English menus.
| Nahualli wrote: | | Does it upset you to know that most any country you go to in the world now you can have access to English-language services as well? Do you not consider that disrespectful as well? |
If English isn't their native language, or "official" language maybe a better way to say it, then yes I do consider that disrespectful. Because they'd have most likely put the English menus in for the lazy English speaking f***s.

No. I'm too lazy to attempt to act on my anger. I have more shit to do in my day (as does everyone else). I'll just go along with the flow and be p****d off.

It just saves time.
honestly, I know some people who thinks that english will become a second language simply because there are bi-lingual signs and services in their area, as if English will die out because their microsociety has a shitload of mexicans in it.
The english language is so prominent I can't imagine it ever becoming a second language in america for at least 3 centuries.

It's all relative... if you go to Lincoln, Nebraska and tell them English is becoming one of several official languages, they'd laugh in your face.
