Why? A popular vote wouldn't really be any different. If we had a strict popular vote who would have won the last election. NO ONE! Because no one single candidate had a clear majority. If you think a plurality system would work nationwide, you are on some seriously bad dope. |
Whatever a 'strict popular vote' happens to be, there would defintely be a winner. Either Gore, who got a plurality, or the winner of a runoff election (probably Gore).
Popular vote seems to work well for other offices. Personally, the worst things about the electoral college as far as I'm concerned are things such as 'faithless' electors, and the fact that House decides the election by congressional delegation (1 Delaware representative has the same weight as 53 California representatives) if there is no majority winner. We should not expect a direct election of every office- but if the people choose the president, which we kinda do now, they we should choose it directly. If we don't, let the Congress or State legislatures choose it.

They may as well scuttle the electoral college now. It was intended to keep the focus off a few cities/states and involve the whole country, but after a few elections of Florida/Ohio drama, they might reconsider.

after the last election, my friends who were screaming about florida said that what we really need are electronic voting machines, and that would solve everything.
I predicted that in a few years they would scream that the voting machines are unfair, dont leave a paper trail..etc..etc, and was called a crackpot.
